Robert Morris College Becomes Robert Morris University

Courtesy of www.robertmorris.edu:

President Michael P. Viollt and the Board of Trustees of Robert Morris College proudly announce that the institution has changed its name to Robert Morris University Illinois.  The new name becomes official May 1, 2009.

RMU’s main campus is located at 401 S. State Street in Chicago.  It has seven other campus sites, including Orland Park, Bensenville, DuPage, Lake County, Schaumburg, Peoria and Springfield. The new name announcement was shared throughout the campuses among students, faculty and staff with celebratory events, including an official unveiling of the new name in the University’s State Street Art Gallery, “logo parties” with the new name on cookies and candies, and the distribution of newly branded t-shirts for the entire Robert Morris University community.

“It is important to involve everyone in celebrating our new identity,” commented President Viollt.  “Our name has changed a bit, but our commitment to our students remains the same.” Over the next few months, the University will complete the task of changing its signage on everything from campus signs to the website to athletic jerseys.

Robert Morris College was first established in Illinois in 1965 at the site of the former Carthage College.  It expanded to Chicago in 1975 when it acquired the Moser School of Business, whose origins go back to 1913, and it opened the additional campus sites from 1988 to the present. In 2005, Robert Morris opened the Morris Graduate School of Management, offering graduate level classes at all campuses.

RMC Softball team joins An Angel's Touch to aid needy families during holidays!

Posted By: Coach Lauren Joyce Hensel on 2008-12-27 14:34:58 ESTEmail Story  |  Flag As Spam  |  Comments (0)

Chicago, IL - For the fifth consecutive holiday season, the merry elves of the Robert Morris Softball team have taken an extra base in aiding An Angel's Touch--a non-profit grassroots organization dedicated to assisting families in times of need--to provide gifts of food, clothing, and toys to a trio of families in Chicago's southwest suburbs.

"This is an event our players look forward to," said RMC Athletic Director and Softball Coach Megan Smith Eggert.  "They have all been blessed with great gifts such as their athletic abilities and the opportunity to pursue their college educations while they play a sport they love.  This activity helps put things in perspective for them."

An Angel's Touch us a federally recognized organization formed in 1991 by Patrick and Georgene Mitchell after they had suffered and survived set-backs of their own.  The Mitchells decided that would seek out and aid a family in need as they had been.  Soon family and friends joined them in their efforts and in each subsequent year, the number of families that received assistance grew.  Eventually the Mitchells and their partners were working all year around collecting clothing, canned goods, and money for the purchase of perishables and other necessities.  At Christmas children were given stockings hand-made and stuffed by members of the organization.  By 2003, An Angel's Touch was reaching out to more than 120 families.

"No one involved with An Angel's Touch is paid in any way," said Coach Smith Eggert, "other than the satisfaction of making a difference in people lives.  This is exactly what the NAIA's Champions of Character program is about. We're lucky to have the chance to help a great organization like this."

Champions of Character is a program of The National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics designed to promote character development in youth and change the culture of sport.  The NAIA developed the in response to the growing problem of deteriorating standards of integrity in sports and society. At a time when all of sport has experienced increasingly abhorrent behavior by athletes, coaches, fans and parents, NAIA Champions of Character raises the standards for positive youth development in athletics and academics.

The culmination of the RMC Softball team's effort to assist An Angel's Touch is a wrapping party when all of the toys, clothing, and other gifts the players have collected and purchased are prepared.

"It's an evening when we can get together for something besides the game," Coach Smith Eggert explained.  "It may sound like a cliche, but they really have learned the true meaning of Christmas."

The Robert Morris College School of Nursing and Health Studies will begin offering classes in a new track, Applied Health Sciences, in its Bachelor of Professional Studies program.  Students with an associate degree in a health studies field can pursue a bachelor’s degree with in this track beginning with the winter term, starting December 1.

As a program within the School of Nursing and Health Studies, this track explores such health related issues as global health, early life cycle and adult diseases, and ethical and legal issues in the healthcare field.  The required internship is based on the First Responder National Standards Curriculum and upon completion, students will be able to pursue the State of Illinois First Responders credential.

“The program is a natural progression for health studies students,” explained Mablene Krueger, RMC provost.  “Combining these upper level courses in health studies with the established courses for the professional studies degree enables students to complete a well-rounded baccalaureate program that has a specialization in their selected field.”  Students who complete a Bachelor of Professional Studies will be prepared for positions in management in hospitals, nursing homes, clinics, residential facilities, doctors’ offices or other health related settings.
