2008-2009 Niagara University ACHA Purple Eagles Season PreviewHead Coach Larry BrzeczkowskiAssociate Coach: Clay MillerAssistant Coaches: Jason Jones, Jim Kelley, Brandon Wrightwww.NUACHAHOCKEY.comFor all your Purple Eagle News and Highlights! Purple Eagles Overview The 2008-2009 Purple Eagles enter the season with a tremendous amount of anticipation. The 2007-2008 campaign for the team was not only a memorable affair but also historic. The Purple Eagles recorded their highest ever ACHA National Ranking of #14. The team would remain in the top 25 for the entire season, and finish up ranked #17. David Demizio “C” (Niagara, Falls, NY) will enter his senior season after compiling 63 points (27g, 36a) last year. Sean Carmack (Chantilly, VA), Anthony Clair (Amherst, NY), and Nick Gollaher (Rochester, NY) will all look to improve on their 30+ point production of a year ago. Sophomores Shane Mueller (Buffalo, NY), Joey Chiomastro (Sayville, NY), and Kevin Morrison (Nesconset, NY) will undoubtedly build upon very successful first seasons in Purple and White. Joe Finelli (Hamilton, Ontario), The addition of Mike Saya (Syracuse, NY), Trevor Kenney (South Burlington, VT), Tom Peffall (Ambler, PA), and T.J. Popovich (Philadelphia, PA), Tom Mooradian (Lewiston, NY) and transfer Jeff Osler (Brockville, Ontario) will immediately add depth and consistency to the team up front. The Purple Eagles defensive core will be a group of primarily veterans. Seniors Bobby Dornan “C” (Rochester, NY), Donny Baxter “C”, and Eric Reeners “C” (Rochester, NY) will enter their final seasons on Monteagle Ridge looking to build upon last years gains in both ends of the rink. The upper classmen will be joined by Junior Kevin Zola (Batavia, NY) and sophomores Patrick Roth (Ronkonkoma, NY) and Kevin Morrison, who will make up the returning defenseman. Walk-on Chris Siebert (Buffalo, NY) will enter the mix as the Purple Eagles begin to look towards developing fine young talent on the blue line. The goaltending responsibilities for the upcoming season are wide open. ACHA Rookie of the Year Runner- Up Mike Battaglia accepted an offer to play NCAA Division III for SUNY Genesseo. Even with the departure of Battaglia, the Eagles are confident that Senior Keith Rybka (Cleveland OH) and Sophomore Chris Pasani (Ogdensburg, NY) will answer the call between the pipes. Freshman Anthony Badolato (Niagara Falls, NY) and Ian Hurtbubise (Buffalo, NY) will join the netminder ranks. New FacesThe new season will see many new faces on campus for the Purple Eagles. The 2008-2009 Recruiting Class is arguably the best in team history. Trevor Kenney (Dixie Beehives, OPJHL JR. A), Mike Saya (Bridgton Academy, JR. A), Tom Peffall (Philly Thunder UJHL, JR. A), Will Rinaldi (South Muskoka Shields GMHL JR.A), and T.J. Popovich (Tri State Selects MJHL JR. B) all have experience playing at the top levels of junior hockey in both the United States and Canada. Talented recruits can come from both far and near. The 2008-2009 team will also feature some “homegrown” talent. Tim Seel (Amherst AAA 18U) and Tom Mooradian (Wheatfield AAA 18U) both led their Midget Major teams to very successful seasons in ‘08. Drew Mencer who played last year for the Buffalo Stars junior program will add some hometown flair to the blue-line. Eagles on the RoadThe Eagles will be traveling close to 8,000 miles during the upcoming season. Most notably on the schedule are trips to #23 Robert Morris College (Chicago, IL), #5 Penn State University (State College, PA), #6 University of Ohio (Athens, OH), Towson University (Towson, MD), along with annual trips to take on ECHL foes #16 Robert Morris University (Pittsburgh, PA.), Mercyhurst College (Erie, PA.), and Syracuse University (Syracuse, NY) In early December, the team will vacate the snow and cold of Western New York in hopes of warmer weather and a pair of wins. For the first time in team history the club will venture to Tempe, Arizona to battle the Arizona State University Sun Devils. Eagles at HomeThe upcoming home schedule will not be any easier for the squad. Dwyer Arena will host #20 Slippery Rock University and #25 Adrian University along with the teams first ever match up against cross-town rival Canisius College. These non-conference math-ups will compliment the Eagles usual ECHL slate of home contests. In the past two seasons the Eagles have strung together several double-digit home-winning streaks. Last seasons the Purps notched a team record 12 straight wins inside of Dwyer Arena. New Faces Behind the BenchRecent 2008 grads Jim Kelley and Brandon Wright have joined the staff while they are at Niagara obtaining their Master’s Degree. The pair of former captains will be in charge of scouting ECHL opponents as well as game day preparations during the season. Post Season Awards Before we begin a new season, let us look back 2007-2008 season, which saw many Purple Eagles obtain very prestigious post season awards. Head Coach Larry Brzeczkowski was runner up for the ACHA Coach of the Year. Brzeczkowski was selected as a finalist out all other Div 1 ACHA coaches. Under Brzeczkowski’s leadership the team reached its highest national ranking of 14th. Mike Battaglia was selected as a finalist for ACHA Rookie of the Year. Battaglia also won ECHL Rookie of the Year during his freshman campaign. Senior Captains Brandon Wright and Jim Kelley were named ACHA Academic All Americans. Wright achieved the highest GPA in the nation accumulating a 3.99 GPA over his four years at Niagara. Sophomore Kevin Morrison and graduating senior Eric Schottke were honored with ECHL All Star Team selections. While Brandon Wright, Eric Reeners, and Nick Gollaher all obtained second team honors. Last, but certainly not least, the following players were named to the ECHL All Academic Team 3.99 GPA Brandon Wright 3.89 GPA Jim Kelley 3.67 GPA Shane Mueller 3.65 GPA Eric Reeners 3.53 GPA Joe Chiomastro 3.52 GPA Nick Gollaher 3.50 GPA Chris Pasani 3.50 GPA Kyle Sippell Go Purps! USA Hockey Tours Dwyer Arena2008-09-12
Buffalo, NY in conjunction with Niagara University and Dwyer Arena among finalists for 2011 IIHF U-20 World Junior Championship.
It is no secret that Dwyer Arena, the home of the Purple Eagles, is a marvel of a rink. However, very possibly the entire world will be let in on that fact!
Niagara's on-campus arena most recently was home to the 2008 Buffalo Sabres Rookie Prospect Camp and now may host part of the 2011 IIHF U-20 World Junior Championship.
Buffalo, NY has recently been named as a finalist to host the 2011 tournament. As part of the tournament Dwyer Arena would host several games in conjunction with action taking place at HSBC Arena.
The team is proud to call Dwyer Arena their home rink! What a thrill it would be for the team to share the same arena with some of the best players in the entire world!
The Purple Eagles are one of only two ACHA teams in the entire nation to have their home rink be an on-campus, NCAA Division 1 facility.
Exerpt from Niagara Falls Gazette...
JUNIOR HOCKEY: USA Hockey takes tour of Dwyer By Tim Schmitt E-mail Tim
Don’t think the new luxury suite in Dwyer Arena’s west end was lost on Jim Johannson.
But the assistant executive director of hockey operations for USA Hockey wasn’t scouting the Niagara University ice rink to see where best to enjoy finger foods during intermissions. Johannson was part of a group deciding where USA Hockey should place the 2011 World Junior Championships, the world’s premier tournament for players under 20.
“We were looking at the guts of the hockey rink,” Johannson said of this week’s tour. “Everybody sees things like the seats and the amenities. We need to see if these buildings can house a tournament of this caliber. Is there enough room for five teams?”
According to Johannson and Mike Bertsch, who heads the group’s marketing and communication, the Buffalo-Niagara area has all the pieces in place to handle such an event.
Buffalo was the first of three cities the group will tour, with Thursday ending a two-day crash course. Grand Forks, N.D., and St. Paul, Minn., are the other two stops.
Dwyer Arena would be the secondary site, handling some of the early contests, while Buffalo’s HSBC Arena would handle the major games and the championship round. The 11-day tournament would consist of 31 games.
According to Bertsch, a final decision should be made by early October.
Johannson said he was impressed with Dwyer’s facilities and thinks the rink could easily fulfill the duties.
“There are little challenges, but there are challenges every we go,” Johannson said. “You can see what they’ve done with it. It looks great. The bottom line is, we can make Dwyer work.”
The event is a major one, ranking with the Frozen Four that came to Buffalo in 2003. According to event organizers, the tournament would bring an estimated $6 million into the economy, and would fill 3,200 room nights in local hotels.
“We’re looking at places that are accustomed to running large events and being successful with it,” Bertsch said. “It’s an international event, so we want to put on our best face.”
Johannson said the Buffalo area has done an outstanding job holding the youth nationals in Amherst the past two seasons, and expects more of the same if the area gets the nod for the world juniors.
“Everyone in the hockey community understands what the World Hockey Junior Championships are in this area,” Johannson said.
The last time the U.S. hosted the event was 2005, when the likes of Phil Kessel, Alexander Ovechkin, Sidney Crosby and Dion Phaneuf all played in Grand Forks.
“The level of hockey is fantastic. For the hockey fans, I honestly think it’s the best championship they have because of the energy level they play with.
“You get the best in the world playing in this championship.”

Niagara University ACHA Hockey www.nuachahockey.com www.achahockey.org
The sun is shining and the calendar reads late August. This can only mean one thing. Another hockey season is upon us. The Purple Eagles will begin their “off-ice” portion of the season tonight with the teams first meeting at Dwyer Arena. The team will be beginning a dryland training regiment tomorrow, which will run until the start of the season in mid- September. A new feature to the Eagles regiment this season will be a three-hour block of ice available to players on Monday’s. These ice times will be available to players allowing team members to focus on individual skills, line chemistry, and full team scrimmages. This undoubtedly is one of the large benefits of having an on campus rink. Niagara is one of only two schools that have an on-campus NCAA Division 1 rink at their fingertips. Recruits Make Niagara New HomeAll 12 recruits have now begun settling into campus life. A special thanks to Christine Schwartz (Asst. Direct of Admissions) and the Niagara University Housing Department whom have been a valuable asset in making the transition for the recruits one of ease. The new Purple Eagles are not only outstanding hockey players but phenomenal students. Several incoming players were awarded over $10,000 in academic and merit based scholarships. Trevor Kenney (South Burlington, VT) will represent the Purple Eagles on the links. Trevor was awarded a golf scholarship and will compete for Niagara’s NCAA Division 1 golf team. Coaching Staff Changes But Stays the Same…The 2008-2009 season will mark another with Head Coach Larry Brzeczkowski at the helm. Brzeczkowski has now been the leader of the Eagles for over a decade. During his tenure he has taken the team from its early infancy to national Top 20 squad. Larry has either won or been a finalist for every major coaching award the ACHA can give out. Brzeczkowski has won the ECHL “Coach of the Year” as well as been a runner up for the same award several times. Most recently the Purps skipper was a finalist for the ACHA “Coach of the Year”. There is little doubt that the team is where it is today due to not only Larry’s great hockey knowledge and coaching style but also the immense dedication that he puts in to the team behind closed doors. Associate Coach and Director of Recruiting Clay Miller (Niagara University ’04) will be returning for his third season in his position. Miller will continue to handle the defensive responsibilities as well as handle the recruiting for the team. Jason Jones (Niagara ’05) is poised to enter his second season as special teams and goaltender coach for the team. Jason played for the Niagara’s NCAA Division 1 team and has been a valuable asset to success of the Purple Eagles special teams. The NU coaching staff is excited to welcome three new members. Justin Corio, Brandon Wright, and Jim Kelley will be new faces behind the bench. Corio was an All American at SUNY Gennesseo (NCAA Div. 3) and will be responsible for working with the forwards as well as “in game” scouting. Former 2007-2008 team captains Brandon Wright and Jim Kelley will be in charge of opposition scouting. The duo will be sent on the road to scout both ECHL opponents and non-league foes. Based on the video and notes taken by Wright and Kelley, the team will be able to formulate effective game plans well in advance. Season Preview…The 2008-2009 Purple Eagles Season Preview will be released in a PDF format by September 15th. Please check back and feel free to download your copy! |

Our team recruiting search for the incoming class is already moving ahead at quite a good pace.
Generally, we do not start to contact players until the season starts. However, this season with the extra buzz created by this seasons recruiting class, it seems that we are starting a bit earlier. Now, more than ever, great players are contacting us! This makes our jobs as a coaching staff a bit easier!
As of today we currently are looking at players from the OPJHL, GMHL, GHL, NAHL, and CSHL Junior A programs. We are also looking a bit closer to home in the MJHL and EJHL.
Due to graduations we will be looking for 2-3 defenseman, a goaltender, and a 2 forwards.

Eagles add Brandon Wright and Jim Kelley ('04) to the staff.
The Purple Eagles are pleased to announce the addition of two former players to the Coaching Staff.
Former Captains Brandon Wright and Jim Kelley have been brought on to coordinate opposition scouting.
Their duties will include advanced scouting of teams the Purple Eagles will face during the season.
Both Brandon and Jim during their time as players showed a tremendous ability to analyze opponents and formulate strategies to use during games.
There is a great advantage to Niagara's location in that it is located literally in the middle of the rest of the ECHL. The Purple Eagles will use this advantage to their benefit by sending the pair to scout ECHL teams as well as non ECHL opponents of the Eagles.
Wright and Kelley will also participate in game day preparations in conjunction with implementing opposing teams strategies into practices.
The Purple Eagles welcome Brandon and Jim!

The Niagara University Division ACHA Hockey team is about to enter another season.
The players are starting to filter back on campus and the coaching staff is hard at work preparing for the upcoming season.
As the coaches hit the road and begin to make contacts with potential recruits for the 2009-2010 season the most commonly asked question is "why play for Niagara?"
The answers are quite easy.
WHY NIAGARA HOCKEY?
On Campus, Multi-Million Dollar Ice Complex within walking distance of all dorms apartments. Niagara is one of only a handful of ACHA programs to have an on campus rink! Dwyer Arena is home to the BUFFALO SABRES "Rookie and Prospect Camp". The Buffalo Sabres recently moved their camp to Dwyer due to its tremendous accommodations Dedicated Team Locker Room Top Recruits from U.S & Canada Prep Schools and Junior A & B Programs (OPJHL, GHJL, EJHL, etc) National Travel Schedule Winning Tradition Dedicated Coaching & Recruiting Staff Head Coach Larry Brzeczkowski (ECHL Coach of the Year Recipient, ACHA Coach of the Year Finalist) Three former Purple Eagles have been invited to pro camps (Mario Nucci, Rick Feroni, and Mike Novosad). Coaching staff with NCAA Division 1 and NCAA Division 3 experience Coverage from local newspapers and on campus news organizations. Access to Dwyer Arena during the day and in between classes for informal captain skates First class travel accommodations Most players live together both on and off campus. The vast majority of players receive financial aid from the University.
Niagara University is located in the hot bed of hockey. Minutes from both Canada and Buffalo, Niagara hockey is a point of pride for the University. There are not many teams who can offer the facilities, coaching staff resumes', and positive culture that NU can. At Niagara, our mission and goals are clear. The question is not if you should become a Purple Ealge. But why wouldn't you become a Purple Eagle? Interested in more reasons why Niagara is the best option for you?

Niagara ACHA Hockey is not a club sport. Our team is run similarly to any NCAA Div 1 or Div 3 team. Our national travel schedule, intense on and off ice work ethic, and dedication is what have made our program a top choice for recruits.

Saya is a 6'0 200lbs forward. This size paired with Niagara's other highly talented larger forwards (Sean Carmack, Anthony Clair) will likely spell trouble for the opposition this upcoming season.
Mike has been on many D1 teams radar and was brought on to our program with help of Coach David Burkholder of the Niagara University Men’s NCAA D1 Team. Trevor Kenney (South Burlington, Vt) Forward Trevor Kenney (South Burlington, Vermont) from the Dixie Beehives of the OPJHL.
Trevor tallied 12 goals and 14 assists in 37 games last season on the Beehives which was good for fifth best on a highly skilled team. He marks the second recruit for the Class of 2012 who has played in the OPJHL that is considered the top Junior program in Ontario.
Kenney has also received a golf scholarship to play the links for the Niagara University golf team.
Director of recruiting Clay Miller commented on the latest signing by asserting " Trevor is going to come in and make an impact right away. He is a highly skilled forward, great skater, and a very hard worker. He had several options on where to go, including NCAA Division 1 offers. We are happy that he chose Niagara and think he will fit in very well with our program."
The Purple Eagles welcome Trevor to the Purple Eagles!
T.J Popovich (Philadelphia, Pa) Forward T.J is another talented forward who has quite an extensive hockey resume. In the past three seasons Popovich has attended two elite prospect camps. In ’05-06 T.J. traveled to play in the Pursuit of Excellence Tournament in British Columbia at just 16 years of age.
More recently T.J traveled to the Toronto Prospects Tournament, which is put on by the ECHL Central Scouting Service and attended, by countless collegiate scouts as well as ECHL owners and scouts. This past season T.J started his season in for the Tri-State Selects of the EJHL. However, his season in the EJHL was cut short due to injury. He would return from injury later in the year and lead his Archbishop-Ryan team in points. Tom Peffall (Ambler, Pa) Forward Niagara receives commitment from 5”11”, 195lbs winger Tom Peffall (Ambler, Pa) from the Philly Thunder (UJHL, Junior A).
Tom Peffal (Philly Thunder, UJHL Jr. A) has committed to join the Purple Eagles Recruiting Class of 2009. The 5’ 11”, 195lbs forward is another highly talented offensive threat that the Eagles have brought in for next season. Tom spent the past two seasons playing for the Philly Thunder of the UJHL Junior A. Last season Peffall tallied 29 points (15g, 14a) in 35 games with the Thunder and was selected as their Assistant Captain. Tom was highly recommended by the Thunder Head Coach Jim Simmons, who has along tenured history of scouting at the pro level. Tom brings a commitment to defense along with a great scoring touch to Monteagle Ridge. “Tom fits the mold of players we really strived to bring in this year. A great skater, comittment to both ends of the ice, and a guy who can put the puck in the net” said Clay Miller (Assistant Coach & Director of Recruiting) of the latest recruit. Head Coach Larry Brzeczkowski commented on comittment by stating “Not only is Tom an excellent hockey player, which is pretty clear based on his stats while playing a high caliber of hockey, but after meeting with he and his family during his recruiting trip you can tell his a man of great character and extremely dedicated to the game of hockey! He will be a great fit with other great recruits we have coming in and our returning core”
Tom is a native of Ambler, Pennsylvania. He is the son of proud parents Hal & Gloria Peffall Will Rinaldi (Marlton, Nj) Defense Rinaldi has spent the past two seasons playing in the GMHL in Toronto, Ontario for the Douro Dukes and played last season for the South Muskoka Shields. The 6’ 3”, 200lbs defenseman also played forward for his Junior A squad.
Head Coach Larry Brzeczkowski who was informed via phone of the commitment commented, “[Will] is going to be a great asset. It gives us more size, which is something we have focused on for this recruiting class…It is always nice to address needs you may have through recruiting. We think Will will give us a some versatility and size for four years.”
Prior to his time the GMHL, William spent time playing his hockey in Kelowna, British Columbia. Rinaldi played at the same prestigious Pursuit of Excellence hockey academy as 2008 recruit T.J Popovich (Tri- State Selects MJHL Jr B.).
Jeff Osler (Brockville, Ontario) Forward Last year Jeff played at Monroe Community College team, which went to the NJCAA National Championship Game. During the season he recorded 9 goals and 11 assists for 20 points. Jeff was the fifth leading scorer on very talented team.
Jeff in his games played against the Purple Eagles was a very good defensive oriented player who was able to generate chances with his great passing.
Jeff is a forward who will come in and be able to immediately make an impact with the Purple Eagles. Jeff is a tremendous athlete who also excels at Baseball for Monroe Community College. Ryan Hughes (Long Island, Ny) Forward Ryan was recruited by the team last but red-shirted his freshman year. Ryan is a hard working, solid forward, who will come in and add toughness to Niagara. Hughes played Juniors in the MJHL. The Purple Eagles look forward to Ryan's return to the ice for the Purps.
Tim Seel (Amherst, Ny) Forward Tim is a forward who played on the Amherst U-18 AAA team that represented New York State in the USA Hockey National Tournament. Tim is great skater and can make things happen on the ice.
Seel led his team in scoring during the National Tournament as well as during the regular season.
While the coaching staff was scouting Seel every present and past coach could not say enough about not only his on ice work ethic as well as what he brought to every team he played for off the ice.
Tom Mooradian (Lewiston, Ny) Forward Mooradian is a forward who plays for the Wheatfield Blades AAA 18U team as well as Lewiston Porter High School. He is a strong skater, natural playmaker, and has an exceptional talent for winning face-offs.
Tom, like Tim Seel, uses speed as key weapon to his game. The coaching staff during this recruiting cycle focused on players with great speed and sense of grit. Tom brings plenty of both to the Purple Eagles for next season.
Drew Mencer (Buffalo, Ny) Defense Drew is another local product and the most recent addition to the Purple Eagles. Mencer is a play making defenseman who played for the Buffalo Stars (CHA) last season. Mencer is so eager to begin his career with the team he has been participating with the Eagles during off-season skates. During the 2007-2008 season with the Buffalo Stars Mencer recorded 6 goals and 24 assists. Drew will fit in well with the plethora of puck moving defenseman already on the Purple Eagles blue line.
Justin Lhuillier (Patchouge, Ny) Defense Justin played for Suffolk PAL the same organization who has yielded Niagara defensive stand outs Kevin Morrison and Patrick Roth. Lhuillier's team also advanced to the USA Hockey National Tournament. Justin is more a stay-at-home defenseman with a good shot. Lhuilliers commitment continues to recent success the Purple Eagles have had recruiting out of the Long Island, Ny area.
Ian Hurtibuise (Tonawanda, Ny) Goaltender Ian will attend Niagara after playing for the Tonawanda Lightning last season. At press time the coaching staff is still waiting to acquire Ian’s final statistics. This profile will be updated.
