By Michael Mann
The ITM freshmen and Junior Varsity teams played extremely well last week.
The Freshman team tied the Center Point Pirates’ JV team 22 to 22 while the JV game ended at halftime in a 0 to 0 tie due to severe weather in the area.
Coaches Mark Bruton and Mark Belford guided the freshmen crew as Nick Schalla led as quarterback on the field.
Schalla made several great passes, drives and even an interception in the third quarter.
Scoring for the Warriors was Sergio Marquez with three long-distance runs. Blake Connell supported with outstanding defense and a two-point conversion. Schalla also handled a conversion as well.
During the JV’s shortened game against Natalia, Bradley Hansen and Weston Hall performed on the defensive side.
The game went toe-to-toe as neither side overpowered the other until lightning called it to a halt. Due to limited players on these two teams, both will be absorbed into the freshmen and varsity teams. |

Campbell sets pace for Tom Moore Published November 5, 2009 INGRAM — Every morning this fall, just before dawn hits Ingram Tom Moore’s black track, the Warrior cross country team is running.
Some members joke with coach Debbie Lozano that they see lightening in the distance, signaling the end of practice, and some just huff and puff from the latest trip around the track.
But senior Janel Campbell walks in the opposite direction on the track’s straightaway, collects her breath after a lap, then heads back to the starting line and watches her running times drastically improve.
On Oct. 28, Campbell won the girls District 8-3A championship meet, qualifying — along with the ITM boys team — for the Regional Championship this Saturday in San Antonio at the Brooks City base.
“It was my first time (winning the district) and it was really exciting,” Campbell said. “Every year I go out there to win it, but this year I finally got it.”
The highest Campbell had placed at previous district meets was fourth, but she had ran well enough to qualify for regionals each time. Campbell and coaches hope her fourth trip to San Antonio will be her best.
“The goal for Janel will be top 10,” Lozano said. “That’s our goal every week — we want her to be in the top 10.”
In the past, Campbell had struggled with pacing herself in races, Lozano said, often times not knowing when to speed up and slow down during the race.
“This season she has kind of come into her own,” Lozano said. “She knows when to back off, when she needs to back off. The Janel we had in the past, she would give you everything that she got every time she went to practice, even when you told her it was a recovery run. She’s learned that she can’t take every practice at race pace. She’s understanding how she runs much better.”
Campbell has been peaking at 12:05 this year for her two-mile runs, and despite being a district champion, said she’s not too worried about any type of pressure with the title during Saturday’s race.
“I don’t have to think about it,” Campbell said. “I just have to go out there and do my best, and that’s all I can do.”
Campbell isn’t the only runner from West Kerr County. Lazano said the boys team — led by Zach Fifer, Eder Alvarez and Campbell’s brother, Sebastian — quietly crept into regionals with its performance on Oct. 28.
“My goals for them is for them to compete strong,” Campbell said. “We kind of snuck in (to regionals) and surprised everybody in our district.”
Lozano said the team is feeling the excitement that comes with running in the regional race.
“We have one freshman on the varsity team, and one freshman on the (junior varsity) team, and they’ve been walking on the clouds.” |

| Had a game against a very good Burnet team last night. We lost 31-0 but overall considering we only had 15 people to there 73, we did ok. As far as me,played well until the end of the third quarter when i had to come out due to back injury, but i am supposed to be well by sunday. Finished the gamd with 2 tackles and 5 assisted. also good game on offense. |
