Perfect Game National Underclass Showcase - Session 1 Mesa, AZ 10/7-8/09

Posted By: Ryan Penaflor on 2009-11-04 14:02:44 ESTEmail Story  |  Flag As Spam  |  Comments (0)

I will be participating in this weekend's Perfect Game National Underclass Showcase Session 1 @ Fitch Park in Mesa, AZ November 7 & 8, 2009. This will be my 2nd Showcase after the AZDR Fall Invitational Showcase last month. (see earlier post)

The National Underclass Showcase was expanded in 2007 to become a series of three showcases. The newly introduced Session 1 and Session 3 Underclass events are held in Mesa, Arizona and Ft. Myers, Florida, respectively. Both events were met with huge success in their inaugural year, with many talented players in attendance. The new sessions provide another great opportunity for underclass players like me to showcase their abilities.

I will be playing for Perfect Game USA GREEN. Good luck to all AZ and PG players!

UPDATE: 11/9/09

I did OF/IF/RHP during the showcase and tried my best and felt good. Started at 3b both games and also played in the outfield with several putouts on both positions and pitched last 2 innings of our last game. Was a little gassed out towards the end but had fun. We'll see how my final evaluation goes.

2009 Arizona Diamond Report Fall Invitational Showcase Workout/ Fall Update

Posted By: Ryan Penaflor on 2009-10-13 10:20:20 ESTEmail Story  |  Flag As Spam  |  Comments (0)

I was honored and privileged to be invited to the 3rd Annual Arizona Diamond Report Fall Invitational Showcase Workout on Thursday October 15, 2009 @ Grand Canyon University in Phoenix. Start time is approximately 530PM.

This is a showcase coinciding with the start of the Arizona Senior Fall Classic run by Mr. Ted Heid which starts October 15 and ends October 18. There will be  a good number of College Coaches in attendance.

QUICK FACTS on the LOCATION:

Brazell Stadium (Baseball)

Brazell Stadium is home to the GCU Antelopes baseball team.  It has an intimate feel and is much like a small town baseball stadium. The dugouts are covered and the stadium features a batter’s eye in center field.  The left field wall is over 30 feet high and resembles the Green Monster at Fenway Park in Boston, MA.  The stadium holds 1,500 people and the dimensions are:

320'-Left Field Line
328'-Right Field Line
390'-Left Center Alley
380'-Right Center Alley

FAMOUS ALUMNI Mr. Tim Salmon (One of my Favorite World Series Heroes)

The Salmon Clubhouse

The Tim Salmon Baseball Clubhouse was built by prominent baseball alumnus, Tim Salmon.  Salmon enjoyed an illustrious Major League Baseball career starting when he was the 1993 American League Rookie of the Year for the California Angels.  He then went on to win the 2002 World Series in seven games against the San Francisco Giants.  Tim recently received an honorary doctorate from GCU in 2006, prior to his retirement from baseball at the end of that same season.

I will probably be in the first group. Thanks to Mr. Ron Benham for giving me this opportunity. I will try my very best to get the most out of this experience and represent Lancer Pride. I am hoping to play in the Junior and Senior Fall Classic next year with a Scout or Club Team .

2009 AZDR UPDATE:

It was a very good experience for a 1st showcase. There were mostly Juniors and Seniors. My 2 varsity Senior  teamates Harrison Graham and Jack Hale were there as well. After the showcase, the  staff told me I was the only sophomore in this year's group. I was able to showcase my skills at 3b and hit as well.

2009 SALPOINTE FALL BALL/PERFECT GAME PRIMER (Sophomore season)

Posted By: Ryan Penaflor on 2009-09-18 00:02:26 ESTEmail Story  |  Flag As Spam  |  Comments (0)

After taking a little time off after our last Summer Varsity game, I started the Summer weight training program and worked on honing my baseball skills for Fall Ball. We started a new strength and conditioning program under our new strength Coach Carla Garrett this Fall. We are really fortunate to have a World Class Coach/Olympian/Athlete to help get us to the next level. I  attended the X2 Baseball combine @ Paradise Valley High School per Coach's recommendation and did pretty well. I learned more about running in 2 hours of this combine than anytime in my life. It was a great pleasure to meet Coach Brandon Campbell and Luke. I believe this program will supplement what Coach Garrett is training us with. Please see related video "Brown Men Can Jump" and official times in my athletic profile page. I have started doing some hitting & pitching clinics with our coaches to stay sharp.

I sent out some letters of interest to universities that I am strongly interested in attending based on their strong athletic and academic programs with good email response so far.

We will start the PIMA WOOD BAT LEAGUE this Sunday with schedules to be posted tomorrow after lifting. There will be GREAT competition against CDO HS (The Dorados are the 2009 4AI AZ State Champs ...primarily known for its academic program and the notable number of Major League Baseball players the school has produced in recent decades including Ian Kinsler of Texas Rangers/Scott Hairston formerly of AZ Diamondbacks and now with SD Padres/Shelley Duncan of NY Yankees/Chris Duncan formerly of STL Cardinals/Boston Red Sox/Brian Anderson formerly of CHI White Sox and now with Boston Red Sox), Nogales HS (The Apaches play in 4A Sonoran Region and always have very good pitching), Mountain View HS (The Lions play in our same region the 5A South), NW Red Raiders (American Legion Team), Tucson Crush (Perfect Game Club Team based in Tucson with players coming from several HS programs). The league ends 10/25/2009. See Related video The Art of Pitching In during our First Fall game.

I am looking forward to work on developing more pitches, play both infield and outfield to develop more skills and hit consistently while continuing our strength and conditioning. I see our program working to be THE BEST IN THE STATE if not THE NATION.

Coming up NEXT BLOG...The Perfect Game Experience..I was invited and will be playing for the Perfect Game USA GOLD Select Team (Underclass) 3b/RHP  in the 2009 Perfect Game National Championships this weekend @ the Kino Sports Complex, Tucson, AZ 9/25-28/2009.

Freshman Varsity Recollection

Posted By: Ryan Penaflor on 2009-08-22 01:28:15 ESTEmail Story  |  Flag As Spam  |  Comments (0)

After all the preparation during the Fall and Winter of 2008, my hardwork was rewarded by getting selected to play for the Salpointe Varsity Baseball Team as a freshman. My role was mainly to be a middle relief pitcher and occasional spot starter.  This experience helped me mature faster and work even harder as there will be more goals to achieve.

My highlight of the Spring season was being named starting 3rd baseman vs the eventual 5A champions Corona Del Sol during our first 5AI playoff game under our first year Head Varsity Baseball Coach Danny Preble.I made 2 assists during that game without an error. We went further in the playoffs than any Salpointe team since the 1996 & 1997 5A State Championship games.

During the Summer of 2009, I was given more opportunities to play several positions including RHP, 3b, 1b and LF. Raw footage of game highlights can be found in my video section. We played in the Tucson Legion Summer League and participated in  3 tournaments including my stint with SABA 16U USA Baseball.

I am determined to contribute more to our varsity team during my Sophomore year. I feel we have a very competitive and close knit team that can go deep into the playoffs. We are very blessed with a solid coaching staff namely Head Coach Danny Preble (Salpointe Class of 1995)-Pitching/Catching, Coach Vic Acuna-Hitting/MIF , Coach Ernie Durazo-1st Base Coach/CIF (Thanks for taking one for the team!), Coach Steve Coffey (Salpointe Class of 1995) -3b Coach,Coach Steve Preble-Advance Scouting and our newest addition Coach Carla Garrett -Strength & Conditioning (Looking forward to our 6AM meetings!). I envision a batting line-up without any major holes from the 1st to 9th spot. With solid pitching and defense plus great hitting we will TAKE STATE !

2009 16U USA Baseball SABA

Posted By: Ryan Penaflor on 2009-08-21 19:36:37 ESTEmail Story  |  Flag As Spam  |  Comments (0)

During the Summer of 2009, I was proud to be selected as  one of eighteen players from the Southern Arizona Baseball Association to participate in the 16U WEST USAB Championships held in Peoria, AZ . Our team was called SABA Baseball. There are some video clips/pictures from that event under  my photos/video section. We finished 16th of 72 teams in this very competitive National Tournament. It was a real honor to be on this team for this summer coming in as a freshman. I played primarily as Relief pitcher and started at 2b during our last game.

After the tournament I received several invitations from colleges to attend their respective camps. Here is an example of an invite from one of my favorite prospective colleges to attend to.

"Congrats on your performance at the 16u Championships in Peoria last week.  Both Coach W. and Coach L. were up there watching the entire event.  As a staff, we feel as though the 16U tournament has done an outstanding job of collecting the finest young talent on the west coast on a yearly basis…this year being no different.  With the vast number of players, it is imperative that we get a closer and longer look at you to give a complete evaluation on your abilities.   We would really like you to come to campus to play in our All Star Camp.  The look we got last week was good but now we would love to spend a week with you and really get to know you as a player and more importantly as a person.  The link for the camp is here.  More than half of our current team played in this camp showing the high value we as a staff put on it.  I really hope to see you in one of the coming weeks."

Unfortunately, I was not able to attend any Summer Camps this year. However, I am looking forward to hone my skills during the fall and winter to get me ready for the spring of 2010. I plan to start attending some showcases in the Fall and definitely go to College Prospect Camps either in the Winter or next Summer.

Below is the link from a press release  from free-press-release.com prior to the USAB tournament.
