The first inning brought some heavy hitting from both teams as Del Valle scored three off a two-run shot by Nick Arnold and a solo blast by Landan Thiem, but Canyon Lake got two of the runs back on RBI by Jenkins and Nabors to cut the Cardinals lead to just a single run.
The Hawks saw their offensive machine start to click on all cylinders in the second as Canyon Lake scored four runs on four hits to take a 6-3 lead, but the Cardinals got an RBI by Emilio Govea to cut the lead to just two after four innings of play.
The Hawks tightened up a bit in the fifth, as Jesse Barba scored on a wild pitch and Dunavant employed a shrewd bit of strategy, electing to intentionally walk Nick Arnold, who had already homered.
It was a decision Dunavant thought could make or break the game.
“We saw Arnold when we played in the Canyon tournament and didn’t get him out there. I knew from the guys I had talked to that he was their No. 1 stick. He came up here tonight and hit one in the gap,” said Dunavant. “So I told the assistant coach that if he had any chance to cause more damage, we were walking him. Putting him on jacked the bases loaded, but I was going to take my chance with the guy behind him. A three-run bomb would have put the game out of reach.”
The Hawks’ lead would disappear in the sixth inning as Govea, who was 3-for-4 on the night, continued his hot night at the plate, hitting a ground-rule double with no outs. Ty Gear drove Govea in with a triple to right field and Michael Rendon’s single up the mid-dle brought in Gear, giving the Cardinals a 7-6 lead.
Rendon then scored as the David Teran beat out a double play attempt. |
