Wildcats abound on all-league team

Sports - Louisburg

It was a special season for the Louisburg soccer team, and it showed in the recent all-Frontier League team released a week ago.

This year's version of the Wildcats featured a goal-scorer who shattered the team's single-season goal scoring mark, a shutdown goalkeeper and a midfielder who came one assist away from tying the state record. So it became an easy decision for those three players to make the first team.

Seniors Stephen McTeer and Anthony Juarez, along with junior Woody Watson, made the league first team, while fellow teammates Ray Crosswhite and Austin Hyden earned second team honors. McTeer and Juarez were unanimous selections.

"I really felt we were represented well," Louisburg coach Ben York said. "Several players had great seasons and our league was a tough league. I would have liked to have one or two more guys on the first team, but our league was so good this year and it is tough to get everyone where you want them."

The Wildcats featured a couple of record breakers in the midfield in McTeer and Watson. McTeer set the team record with 23 goals in a single season, with some of those coming on assists from Watson.

Watson finished the year with 20 assists, which set a team record and nearly tied a state record in the process.
"Stephen obviously had a great season," York said. "He is just a natural goal scorer and most of those goals that he had, he scored on his own. He really had a great year.

"Woody is such a great passer and he sets the other guys on the team up well. He has a great touch on the ball."

Juarez was the overwhelming favorite as the league's top goalkeeper after he allowed 18 goals in 19 games and recorded several shutouts in the process.

"Anthony really came a long way from when he started," York said. "He didn't even know how to play goalie as a freshman, started to learn it when he was a sophomore and now has been voted first team all-league, which I think says a lot about him. He has kept us in a lot of games this year and had a great year. He is just such a natural athlete and what he did this year for us was phenomenal."

As a second-team selection, Crosswhite finished the year with 15 goals scored, while Hyden played well on defense throughout the year. However, the league honors weren't the only ones rolling in for these five players.

McTeer, Crosswhite, Watson, Juarez and Hyden each earned all-Central Region honors, while York was named Coach of the Year for the third consecutive season.
They were recently given higher awards by the Kansas Soccer Coaches Association, as Crosswhite, Juarez and McTeer were first team all-state selections, while Watson and Hyden earned honorable mention honors.

"I think it says a lot about the team we had with these honors," York said. "We dominated a lot of games this year and we really had a great group of guys and had good balance."

OVERLAND PARK — As far as Class 4A soccer goes, the Louisburg soccer team might have well been called “The greatest show on turf.”

The Wildcats certainly looked the part Friday.

Louisburg downed Spring Hill 4-0 to capture its third straight Class 4A regional championship at the Overland Park Soccer Complex, which features a turf playing surface. The win propelled the Wildcats to the state quarterfinal game against St. James Academy on Tuesday.

The last two seasons, the Wildcats have failed to win the quarterfinal game and achieve that goal of a state tournament appearance. The players were excited with their third regional crown, but they know they have bigger business to attend to.

“I think we are all pumped with another title, but we have so much more left to do,” Louisburg senior Stephen McTeer said. “We played well and played a complete game. Everyone played great and we just have to keep it going.”

Louisburg (15-3) didn’t waste much time getting started and the Wildcats put the Broncos in an early hole. In the third minute, McTeer put a shot past Spring Hill goalie Zach Boyle for the game’s first goal.

Four minutes later, the Wildcats struck again.

Senior Derek Symes found the back of the net on an assist from fellow senior Ray Crosswhite to give the Wildcats more than enough cushion from the Broncos’ attack.

“I think we probably played our most complete game of the season,” Louisburg coach Ben York said. “There were times when we looked like a club team out there and a big reason is that the guys like playing on turf. We are definitely a little faster team. We were able to start and finish the game well and that will be very important from here on out.”

The Wildcats put the match away in the second half on a pair of goals. In the 52nd minute, McTeer scored his second goal of the game on an assist from Symes. McTeer’s shot hit off Boyle’s hands and in the back of the net.

Four minutes later, Louisburg sealed the win. Reserve senior Taylor Burdine hit a shot to the upper-right part of the net on a one-on-one opportunity against Boyle.

Louisburg’s defense did its part as well. Goalkeeper Anthony Juarez got the shutout, while defenders Zack Hill, Jake Wittry, Tanner O’Hara, along with midfielders Austin Hyden and Max Wallerstedt, did their part to limit the Broncos’ shots on goal.

The Louisburg soccer team won its third straight regional title Friday in Overland Park after a 4-0 victory over Spring Hill. Members of the team are (front row, from left) head coach Ben York, and his son Gavin, Woody Watson, Taylor Burdine, Ray Crosswhite, Anthony Juarez, Stephen McTeer, Max Wallerstedt; (second row) Nicholas Shibe, Austin Hyden, Zack Hill, Kevin Sitek, Stacy Curtis; (back row) Jake Wittry, Derek Symes, Cameron Philgreen, A.J. Bair, Geoff Monceret, Aaron Burrow, Tanner O’Hara and assistant coach Tony Juarez. (Photo by Andy Brown)

The Wildcats tried for its first state tournament appearance Tuesday in the state quarterfinals against St. James Academy at Lewis-Young Park, but results were unavailable at press time. Check www.herald-online.com for updates Wednesday morning and look for a full story and wrap-up in Friday’s Weekend edition.
Louisburg hopes to finally get over the hump of that state quarterfinal match.

“That game has definitely been a monkey on our backs,” McTeer said. “And I am ready to get it off.”

York believes the sky is the limit for this team and hopes the Wildcats can make the state trip this weekend to Towanda. The state tournament begins Friday and runs through Saturday.

“Of the three teams that have made the state quarterfinal, this team probably has the best shot at making it to state,” York said. “Everything has really lined up for them and hopefully we can keep playing well.”

Louisburg

From the first minute of the match, the Louisburg soccer team made sure
Baldwin knew it was going to be a long night — and for the Bulldogs, it
was.

Louisburg
senior Stephen McTeer scored less than 10 seconds in, and it was all
Wildcats after that in the 4-1 victory over Baldwin on Tuesday at
Lewis-Young Park.

Baldwin, which came into the game with
just one win, had a tough time staying with the Wildcat scorers,
including McTeer. For the second game in a row, McTeer posted a hat
trick after he punched in a penalty kick late in the second half.

“Stephen is
definitely finding some openings right now, and he is taking advantage
of them,” Louisburg coach Ben York said. “I really think that will lead
other guys like Daniel (Wilson), Ray (Crosswhite) and Woody (Watson) to
really step it up more as well, because there is kind of a friendly
rivalry between those guys. That should only help us.”

The
Wildcats, who are now ranked No. 5 in the Class 4A-1A poll, are now
10-2 on the season and a perfect 5-0 in the Frontier League. Not to
mention that the Wildcats also won the league tournament last month.

With the latest victory over Baldwin, York is happy to see his team where it is.

“It
is a league win, and that is always a good thing,” he said. “We got
what we needed to get out of this game, and it is time to move on and
keep working. I think we worked the ball pretty well against (Baldwin),
and we did some nice things. We didn’t play as well in the second half
as I would have liked, but we got some other kids in the game late, and
that is always nice to see.”

After McTeer opened the game with a
goal in the opening seconds, Wilson took his turn just a few minutes
later. In the seventh minute, he put a shot past the Baldwin goalie for
the 2-0 lead.

McTeer struck again in the 21st minute with his
second goal. Baldwin’s Caleb Michaels scored three minutes later to
prevent the shutout, but Louisburg still led 3-1 at halftime.

In
the 71st minute, the Wildcats were fouled in the box, and McTeer took
the penalty kick. He scored and eventually secured the win for
Louisburg.

Louisburg faced off with Spring Hill on Thursday and returns to action Tuesday, when it plays host to St. James Academy.

Two seconds worth plenty for ‘Cats
Sports - Louisburg
Written by Andy Brown
Friday, 02 October 2009 08:00
Not many things can happen in just two seconds, but Stephen McTeer found at least one thing that can.

With two seconds left in a second and final overtime, the Louisburg soccer team and Turner found themselves deadlocked in a tie. In those two seconds, however, the Wildcats emerged victorious.

Junior Woody Watson threw in a line-drive pass near the corner with two seconds left, and McTeer dove in for the header to score past the Turner goalie with 0.9 seconds left to give the Wildcats a 2-1 victory Tuesday at Lewis-Young Park.

“It is such an awesome feeling,” McTeer said. “When I saw the pass, I just ran toward the goal, jumped and stuck my head out there. The next thing I knew is, I turned around and saw the ball in the net.”

It was an exciting ending to what shouldn’t have been an exciting game. The Wildcats (8-2) had 21 shots on goal and had several chances to regulation to put the game away, but only a McTeer goal in the first half was all the Wildcats could up with.

Turner put together a couple nice runs throughout the game, but Louisburg goalie Anthony Juarez kept the Bears in check until five minutes left in the second half. Turner ripped a shot from about 25 yards that sailed past a diving Juarez.

It all seemed eerily familiar to Louisburg coach Ben York, who just a week earlier, lost a 2-1 overtime match to Maranatha after holding a 1-0 lead until late, and the team couldn’t finish its shots.

“It really did seem like that game,” York said. “But this is a great win for us, because now we have some confidence in ourselves, especially if we have to go into another overtime game again. We didn’t play great, but we made the plays when it counted.”

After Turner’s goal in the 86th minute tied the game, both teams went back and forth at each other. Two minutes later, McTeer appeared to have the game-winning goal on another header, but the Turner goalie made a leaping save to keep the game alive.

With seconds left in regulation, Turner nearly won the match after Juarez came away from the goal to make a save, the ball bounced away, but Turner couldn’t capitalize on the empty net.

“These always aren’t going to be pretty wins, but we will take it,” York said. “We played really well in regulation for about 89 minutes and 59.5 seconds, but that one time, we let them get a shot, and they took advantage. We just have to do a better job of finishing and taking advantage of opportunities. If we would have tied, it would have been a totally different feeling.”

The Broncos had a hard time containing the Louisburg duo of Stephen McTeer and Ray Crosswhite. McTeer scored the game’s first goal in the 32nd minute after he received a cross from Crosswhite in the box and McTeer found the back of the net.

After Niles Kahn’s goal tied the match in the 44th minute, the Crosswhite/McTeer duo struck again. This time McTeer returned the favor and found his senior teammate with a pass off his back heel, and Crosswhite shot it past Spring Hill goalie Zach Boyle.

“We were pretty confident that we would be able to put it in the net after they tied the game,” Crosswhite said. “Stephen and I work pretty well together, and he made a great pass to me and I had an open look to take it. It feels good to get the win, but we know we can do better.”

The Wildcats sealed the win just a few minutes later when Spring Hill was called for a foul in the box, and it set up a penalty kick. McTeer got the nod and shot it past Boyle in the 70th minute.

Louisburg took to the field again Thursday when it faced Ottawa in the semifinals and will play again in the final day of the tournament Saturday. Spring Hill, on the other hand, traveled to Baldwin on Thursday for the consolation semifinals match.

“We are going to have to play a lot better if we want to achieve our goal and win this thing,” York said. “We need to come out ready to play from the beginning, because if we don’t, we are going to get beat.”

Wildcats outlast De Soto for win

DE SOTO — By the time it was all said and done, the Louisburg soccer players were exhausted — not physically — but mentally.

The Wildcats took a one goal lead early in the game Thursday at De Soto and made it last. Despite several attempts from De Soto to tie the game late, the Wildcats held on for a 1-0 victory and captured their first Frontier League victory in the process.

Not only did Louisburg get the victory against one of the top teams in the league, the Wildcats did so on the road, which made the victory a little sweeter.

“This was definitely a huge win for us,” Louisburg coach Ben York said. “We really played well out there (Thursday). We were able to hold off a couple of huge runs they threw at us, and that was good to see. Our goal is to win the league, and this should give us a lot of confidence to accomplish that goal.”

Louisburg may not have won the game without the stellar play of its defense and goalkeeper Anthony Juarez. The Wildcat senior recorded just seven saves, but all seven were at important times in the second half.

Late in the second half, Juarez made a jump save in the corner of the goal that highlighted his efforts. De Soto continued to press in the second half, but the Wildcats held firm.

“I really wasn’t nervous back there because I have been in games like these before, but I am just mentally exhausted,” Juarez said. “There were a lot of situations there where they got the ball in the box, and we were just able to stop them. The defense really played well.”
The defense of Zack Hill, Tanner O’Hara and Jake Wittry made it difficult on the De Soto offense all night, but the biggest surprise might have been Wittry.

“I thought Wittry really had a heck of a game,” York said. “He is fighting for a job right now, as are some other people, and he made the most of it. He was able to get to a lot of balls and send it out.”

Louisburg got on the board early and set the tone. Wildcat senior Stephen McTeer scored his second goal of the season after he received a cross from teammate Daniel Wilson that he put in the back of the net.

After the goal, McTeer pointed to the arm band he was wearing with the No. 21 written on it. McTeer and his teammates wore the armband in honor of the passing of Jim Huffman, the father of Christian Huffman, who wears No. 21 on the LHS football team.

The Wildcats certainly played inspired soccer the rest of the way and improved their record to 2-1 on the season. Louisburg will now take part in the three-day preseason Frontier League Tournament this week.

No. 2 Louisburg hosted Spring Hill on Tuesday in the first round and will play at home again at 6 p.m. on Thursday.

“I think this tournament is going to be a lot of fun,” York said. “We have never had something like this before, and we will probably play some good teams before it is all over with. We might even see these guys (De Soto) again in the championship game. You never know, but the guys are really looking forward to it and hopefully we can win all three games.”

Louisburg lands six players on team after run in playoffs

By Gene Morris, gmorris@miconews.com

Paola goalie Wil Cunningham and Louisburg midfielder Stephen McTeer highlight the list of Tri-County Spotlight soccer selections.

Eleven players were named to the inaugural spotlight soccer team, recognizing players from Louisburg, Paola and Spring Hill.

Cunningham, who posted six shutouts for the Panthers, and McTeer, one of the anchors for the Wildcat offense, were recognized as defensive and offensive players of the year.

Louisburg dominated the soccer selections with six players named to the 11-man team.

Despite losing 10 seniors from its 2007 team, the Louisburg Wildcats steadily improved during the season and made it all the way back to the state quarterfinals, losing a 2-0 game to Kansas City Christian.

Ray Crosswhite and Woody Watson were selected at forward. Crosswhite had nine goals. Watson had four goals.

Vasil Ristov and McTeer were named at midfield.

Ristov, an exchange student from Macedonia, scored eight goals in his first six games and finished with a team-leading 16 goals on the season.

McTeer scored 15 goals, including two game-winners for the Wildcats.

McTeer and Ristov led the Wildcats offensively and were a big part of the team’s success, Louisburg coach Ben York said.

Sweeper Mark Ostlender and Daniel Wilson were selected at defender.

Ostlender, an exchange student from Germany, was Louisburg’s leading defender, York said.

Wislon was another tough defender who cleared a lot of balls for the Louisburg defense.

Louisburg escapes with 2-1 win against Baldwin in regional playoff

It was a little closer than the Louisburg soccer team wanted in Tuesday's Class 4-3-2-1A regional opener.

The Wildcats, who faced Baldwin for the third time this season, got all they wanted from the Bulldogs, but in the end Louisburg will move on. Thanks to a penalty kick from Stephen McTeer in the second half, Louisburg pulled away for a 2-1 victory.

"When you play a team three times in one year, it is always a dangerous game no matter how good you are," said Louisburg coach Ben York. "I have to give credit to Baldwin. They played and stayed with it. But, in the second half, we really just controlled possession and could have scored several more goals than we did. We just didn't convert those opportunities. But we got the win, and that is what is important, and now we have to focus on our next game."

Louisburg will host Coffeyville Field-Kindley, which defeated Fort Scott 3-1, at 6 p.m. tonight in the second round of regional play. The game will be played at Wildcat Stadium instead of the usual venue of Lewis-Young Park.

The Wildcats opened scoring Tuesday when forward Ray Crosswhite hammered a shot past the Baldwin goalie in the 25th minute, but with two minutes left in the first half, Baldwin's Casey Taylor hit a deflection past goalie Anthony Juarez to tie the game.

York noticed his team was a little apprehensive halfway through the game.

"You could tell at halftime they were a little bit nervous because they knew they should be ahead by a few goals, and they were wondering where the scoring was coming from," York said. "We had several shots in the first half; they just didn't go in. I just told them to be patient and their opportunity will come, and it did."

Louisburg's best opportunity came in the 60th minute when McTeer got a shot at a penalty kick. Baldwin was called for a hand ball in the box, and the Wildcats were awarded the shot.

York gave the opportunity to McTeer and he put the game away. The Wildcat defense of Zack Hill, Tanner O'Hara, Daniel Wilson and Juarez kept the Bulldog offensive opportunities to a minimum.

The Wildcats (11-3-1) will now square off with Field-Kindley (12-5) in the second round of regional action. The two teams have never met before, and York isn't sure what to expect.

"I know the guys will be ready to go Friday, but we have a lot of stuff to work on before then," York said. "It is just a bunch of little things, but we need to take care of business. Maybe not seeing Coffeyville before will help us because maybe now the guys know they have to give 100 percent. I think it will be a good game, and hopefully we can come away with a win."

Ristov and Crosswhite also receive state honors for play on the soccer field this year for LHS

Since the Louisburg soccer team fell in the state quarterfinals to Kansas City Christian, junior Stephen McTeer has been racking up honors like crazy.
Along with teammate Vasil Ristov, McTeer was named to the first team all-Frontier League squad, and along with Ristov and Ray Crosswhite, the Class 4-3-2-1A all-region first team. Another honor came his way a couple of weeks ago.
McTeer was named to the Class 4-3-2-1A all-state first team by the Kansas Soccer Coaches Association. McTeer was second on the Wildcats in scoring with 15 goals.
"I was shocked," McTeer said. "I was just hoping to make it to the all-league team and I was not expecting to make it on the all-state team. There are a lot of good players to choose from."
McTeer wasn't the only Wildcat on the all-state team, however. Ristov and Crosswhite were named to the second team and for good reason. Ristov led the Wildcats with 16 goals and Crosswhite was third with nine goals.
"Vasil and Ray were certainly deserving," Louisburg coach Ben York said. "Vasil did a lot of good things for us and he was one of the better players in our league and we play in a good league. I was a little surprised that Ray made it because he didn't even make the all-league team, but it shows the coaches actually took some time to look at who the good players were."
McTeer has come a long way from his first two years on the team. During those years, McTeer spent most of his time in the back on defense and never had much of an opportunity to score goals.
He took advantage of that this season.
"Starting off, I was wanting to score goals because I had not played midfield before this year and I always played on defense," McTeer said. "When I started scoring at the beginning of the season, I was like ‘Man, I am pretty good at the midfield thing.' I didn't expect to get named to the all-state team or anything like that. I was just hoping for a good year, but it was nice."

The Wildcats, who were on the cusp of an appearance in the state semifinals, return all but two starters next season. That includes Ristov.
Ristov, who is a foreign exchange student from Macedonia, wants to play college soccer in the United States and will return to Louisburg for his senior season. McTeer, Ristov and Crosswhite look to be part of a formidable offense for the Wildcats next season.

Relay Team Breaks Record

Sports - Louisburg

Written by Andy Brown

Wednesday, 03 June 2009 08:00

WICHITA - Vernon Sublett gave the Louisburg boys' track team a nice boost at the Class 4A state track and field championships.

Sublett, who won the triple jump and took third in the long jump, scored 16 of the team's 23 points Friday and Saturday in Wichita, but he wasn't the only Wildcat to leave Wichita State's Cessna Stadium with a medal.

In the field events, freshman Garrett Griffin earned one of the top spots in the javelin, while junior Jason Sattler and Louisburg's 4x800-meter relay team put on a show on the track as both picked up medals. The most impressive, however, might have been the 4x800 relay.

The team of Nathan Goodwin, Mark Sitek, Jamison Parkhill and Stephen McTeer set a personal record time of 8 minutes, 14.34 seconds and beat it by 12 seconds. The time also broke the school record set back in the 1980s and that earned the Wildcats a fifth-place medal and a spot on the award stand.

"You want to PR at state and that is what we did," McTeer said. "We have had some bad races this year, but we have gotten better and we ran our best race at the end. Three of our guys are coming back next year so it will be fun next year."

Goodwin, a freshman, got the Wildcats off to a good start as he ran a 2:02 on the first leg before he handed it off to Sitek. Goodwin didn't get boxed in and kept Louisburg toward the front of the pack.

"We did well, and we were two seconds off the record, so we did pretty well," Goodwin said. "Our goal was to get the record and get a state medal and we came close to getting both."

After getting the baton from Goodwin, Sitek took off and lagged a little on the first lap, but made a big push on the finish before his handoff to Parkhill.

"At the beginning it was pretty bad, but I was able to make a good comeback," Sitek said. "I ran one second off my personal record, so I finished well. We all ran well. That is all you can ask for. Our goal was to get fifth and we accomplished that."

Parkhill, a senior, made his final race as a Wildcat one to remember. He made up a little ground and had Louisburg in the top five in the 16-team field.

"I was just trying to run it as fast as I can since this was going to be my last race here and probably ever," Parkhill said. "I was just trying to give it my all. I was really excited when I handed the baton to Stephen because we were in good shape and he finished it great."

McTeer ran a season-best time of 1:59 in the final leg and created plenty of distance between sixth and seventh-place finishers El Dorado and Paola.

"It hurt a lot," McTeer said of the final two laps. "I ran against Paola all year and we have always had to sprint the last 100 meters. I think the Frontier League and our regional easily has the best half-milers in the state. It was fun to run against some of those guys, and I got to stand on the medal stand with them."

Later in the day, Sattler put on a strong performance in the 400-meter dash. Sattler, who finished fifth a year ago, took sixth overall in 50.93 seconds, and teammate Vasil Ristov finished just out of medal contention in eighth.

Ristov ran a good preliminary race on Friday to put him in the finals and Sattler hoped Ristov had enough in him to take home a medal.

"It feels really good to get another medal," Sattler said. "I had a better time than I did last year, but the athletes just got better. It is just tougher competition this year.

"It really wasn't a surprise to see Vasil make (the finals) because he has been a good runner all year. I was expecting him to be up there with me for a medal."

Griffin was the first Wildcat to pick up a medal Friday with his performance in the javelin. Griffin threw 168 feet, 7 inches to finish sixth and was a good way to complete his first track season.

"I felt like I could do better, but overall I was pretty happy with the way everything ended," Griffin said. "I was pretty consistent for most of the day, but I didn't really pop one when I needed to."

Louisburg also brought the 4x100 and 4x400 relays, but both missed out on the finals. The 4x400 team of McTeer, Michael Kircher, Ristov and Sattler took ninth overall in 3:29.08, while the 4x100 squad of Sattler, Ristov, McTeer and Sublett took 13th in 44.88.
Sophomore Jacob Herbert competed in the pole vault and cleared 11-6, but also finished 13th.
