Area schools well-represented on 5A all-state softball teamsBy LAURA BIERY CatchItKansas.com
St. Thomas Aquinas, Arkansas City and Salina South had the most selections on the Class 5A all-state teams that were recently announced by the Kansas Softball Coaches Association. The schools had four apiece. First-team pitcher Kellie White led Aquinas to the state title, pitching every inning of the Saints' state-tournament games and surrendering just one run in the process. Teammates joining White on the first team are catcher Maegan Mathiasmeier and outfielder Janessa Swinney. Outfielder Molly Macan made the second team.
Ark City managed to place all four of its selections on the first team: catcher Taylor Hatfield, infielder/pitcher Ali Nittler, infielder Laken Parker and outfielder Sarah Hocker. After earning a share of the Ark Valley Chisholm Trail League Division II title, Ark City finished third at state and ended its season 20-3 overall. Despite falling in the state-quarterfinal round to champion Aquinas, four Salina South players earned a spot on one of the teams. Ace pitcher Sarah Wedel made first team, and her catcher, Kaity Crawford, was selected to the second team. Infielder Madison Resley and outfielder Brea Campbell also represented Salina South on the second team. The Cougars went 19-4 and finished third in the AVCTL Division I. State runner-up Bishop Carroll had three selections. Standout pitcher Katie Armagost and clean-up hitter Stephanie Harshberger were named to the first team. Catcher Erica Hampton was a second-team pick. Carroll won a share of the City League title and finished 20-5. The Eagles fell to Aquinas in the state-championship game 3-0. Newton and Great Bend each had an infielder selected. Newton's Meghan Boston and Great Bend's Kortney Friess both garnered second-team recognition. Newton did not advance to the state tournament, and Great Bend was ousted in the first round of state play after going 18-2 in the regular season.

Aquinas softball team wins, ends title frustrationBy PAT SANGIMINOSpecial to The Star
It only seemed fitting that senior Molly Macan, whose standout career at St. Thomas Aquinas had been overshadowed by a series of heartbreaking state playoff losses, would be the catalyst in the Saints’ game-winning, seventh-inning rally Saturday. Aquinas’ 3-0 victory over Bishop Carroll clinched its first Kansas Class 5A title since 1997.“It’s such a surreal feeling,” Macan said. “I really can’t describe it.”Macan is the Saints’ table setter. Her speed is her weapon, but when she came to the plate with runners on first and second in the seventh inning of a scoreless game, her role changed.“I needed to hit the ball to the right side to move the runners up,” she said.A questionable strike call changed that by putting her two strikes down in the count. She responded by slapping a double to the gap in left-center field to drive in the game’s first run and move Ellen Drummond to third base. Three pitches later, Drummond broke for home on a passed ball. She scored easily, and when the rattled Eagles didn’t pick up the ball, which rested near home plate, Macan made her own dash for the plate, scoring from second.“I think that flustered them more than they already were,” she said. A three-run lead with one inning to play was more than enough for sophomore Kellie White, who tossed a two-hit shutout and allowed just a single run in 21 innings of work over the course of the weekend.“I settled everyone down and we focused on getting out of there,” White said. And that’s where the real celebration began. The hugs. The screaming. The ice water bath for unsuspecting coach Christine Orel. All of the close calls of recent years were washed away by Saturday’s victory.Orel, who has witnessed her share of heartbreaking defeats over the years, said this team continually showed resiliency, and the three wins in Wichita epitomized that point.“We didn’t always take advantage of opportunities, but we kept pushing — we kept at it,” she said. “This is special for these girls. We’re state champions again. We’re finally state champions again.”The Saints, 20-5, advanced to the championship by blanking Shawnee Heights 5-0. Carroll needed nine innings to edge top-seeded Arkansas City 1-0.

Kansas 5A High School Softball
Saints softball went into the regional tournament as the number one seed, and handily defeated their opponents on Monday. The Saints beat Washington by run rule in 3 innings in their first game.
