KERSEY — The Platte Valley High School football team showcased its defense during the Broncos' 19-3 2A first round playoff win against Classical Academy on Saturday.
Platte Valley's defense snatched five interceptions, three by Chase Maxey and two by Sterling Zehnder.
“We had five interceptions, that's huge,” said Platte Valley coach Mike DeWall.
Zehnder returned one interception for the Broncos' second touchdown in the second quarter.
“It just opened up,” Zehnder said. “Their linemen weren't blocking who they were supposed to, and the field opened up for me.”
The victory against Classical Academy advances Platte Valley into the 2A quarterfinals at Brush at 1 p.m. Saturday. Brush defeated Florence 10-7 in the first round.
Zehnder's next interception came near the end of the third quarter. Maxey made his first two interceptions in the second quarter, one on a third-and-17 situation, and the other on a second-and-goal.
“For our defense, Chase and Sterling basically are the masterminds in making the right coverage and the right play,” DeWall said.
Maxey's third interception gave the Broncos the final possession to end the game.
Besides the play of Maxey and Zehnder, DeWall said he was impressed by his squad of linebackers.
Seniors Aaron Olson and Seth Baladez put pressure on the Titans, causing losses in yardage.
“Aaron Olson is a good leader, and he's a man-child in there,” DeWall said. “Baladez also had a solid game.”
Platte Valley's first touchdown came from senior quarterback Jordan Smith, who rushed in five consecutive plays inside Classical Academy's red zone before finally breaking through for a touchdown.
Jordan Smith rushed for 201 yards, breaking the 1,000 yards mark for this season and was 3-for-7 passing for 38 yards and one interception.
On both Platte Valley touchdowns, the Broncos successfully went for two-point conversions. Kicker Rachelle Tekler also tacked on a field goal in the fourth quarter.
All in all, the Broncos' defense was the main factor in sealing the win by holding down the Titans' offense to 161 total yards and a second quarter field goal.
“Overall, our defense got us the game,” Zehnder said. “But our offense is stepping up.” |

Saturday
Platte Valley (6-0, 8-1) at Weld Central (5-1, 7-2), 1 p.m.
If Platte Valley wins, it claims the 2A Patriot League title outright for the first time. If Weld Central wins, it earns a share of the title with the Broncos and possibly Brush.
The Broncos have won six straight league games since dropping a nonleague game to Colorado Preps' top-ranked team, Faith Christian, 16-13 in overtime on Sept. 18. During that stretch Platte Valley has recorded five shutouts, including four straight, outscoring its opponents by an average of 34.7-1.2 points per game. The Broncos still haven't surrendered a touchdown on defense in league play.
Platte Valley senior linebacker Aaron Olson leads the defense with 108 total tackles, an average of 12 per game. Of those, 21 are for losses and three are sacks. Senior quarterback Jordan Smith leads a balanced Broncos offense with 945 rushing yards and 18 touchdowns on 119 carries and 699 passing yards on 51-of-103, with six touchdowns and four interceptions.
Weld Central has similar balance to its offense. Junior quarterback JJ Sirios has 560 yards, six touchdowns and no interceptions on 37-of-59 passing. He has 351 rushing yards and 10 touchdowns on 69 carries. Senior running back Edgar Castro leads the Rebels with 783 yards and nine touchdowns on 127 carries.
Weld Central has won two straight with its only league loss coming against Brush 22-15 on Oct. 16. In league, the Rebels have outscored opponents an average of 36.7-23.8.

GREELEY — Platte Valley shut out University 51-0 in a Class 2A Patriot League matchup on Saturday.
The Broncos (6-0, 8-1) were led defensively by junior strong safety Kilian Solars and senior middle linebacker Aaron Olson, and offensively by senior quarterback Jordan Smith, who ran for 123 yards on 12 carries. Smith ran for three touchdowns and passed for two.
University fell to 2-4 in league and 2-7 overall.
Platte Valley takes on Weld Central next week. If the Broncos win, they will clinch the Patriot League title. A Weld Central win will result in a three-way tie between Weld Central, Platte Valley and Brush.

Platte Valley 37, Valley 0: In Kersey, Platte Valley continued its streak of dominant defensive performances, shutting out Valley in a Class 2A Patriot League football game Friday.
Broncos coach Mike DeWall said his team did a good job of swarming to the ball and causing havoc in the backfield for the Vikings (1-4, 4-4).
This was the third week in a row that Platte Valley (5-0, 7-1) didn't allow an opposing offense to reach 100 total yards.
The only league game in which a Broncos opponent topped 100 yards was against Brush.
The one touchdown Platte Valley surrendered in league was against Eaton on a fumble in its own end zone. The Broncos defense hasn't allowed a touchdown in league play.

Platte Valley 45, Estes Park 0: In Estes Park, the Broncos took sole possession of first place in the Class 2A Patriot League by wiping aside Estes Park.
The Broncos (4-0 3A Patriot, 6-1 overall) held Estes Park to minus-15 yards rushing and 29 total yards. Junior defensive end Ray Acevedo returned a fumble 15 yards for the Broncos' first touchdown.
Platte Valley coach Mike DeWall said senior linebacker Ryan Smith was all over the place defensively, and senior cornerback Sterling Zehnder did not allow completions to his side of the field.
The Broncos rolled up 325 yards of rushing offense led by 168 from Jordan Smith and 95 from Clay Flot.

Platte Valley 15, Strasburg 0: In Kersey, the Broncos defense gave up just 75 total yards, and their offense settled down in the second half, wearing out previously unbeaten Strasburg to improve to 3-0 Class 2A Patriot League and 5-1 overall.
Coach Mike DeWall said the Broncos defense was “phenomenal,” making life difficult for the Strasburg quarterback. Although they didn't amass lots of sacks, DeWall said they were able to bat down passes and force Strasburg into throw-aways.
Platte Valley senior Jordan Smith led the offense with 123 yards rushing and two touchdowns, including a 85-yard run in the third quarter. The Broncos made some minor adjustments at halftime and finished with 238 yards rushing.
Rachelle Tekler nailed a 28-yard field goal with the wind in the second quarter.

The Keys Turning point: After a defensive-minded first 12 minutes, Platte Valley recovered a fumbled punt return on the Eaton 17 at the end of the first quarter. The turnover set up a short drive for the Broncos' first touchdown early in the second quarter. Best Individual Performer: The Broncos defense was as stout as always, but it was senior quarterback Jordan Smith's hard-running and big passing plays that led Platte Valley to its second highest point total of the season. What it means: Through two weeks of league play, Platte Valley has breezed past Brush and Eaton, its biggest rivals and the two teams — along with Weld Central — that figured to provide the Broncos stiffest competition for a league title. The Reds face another stiff challenge next week against Brush as they seek their first win. Bobby Fernandez By Bobby Fernandez

EATON — Platte Valley was focused on not allowing the big plays in its football game against Eaton.
The Broncos didn't only prevent the big plays, they weren't too willing to allow short plays, medium plays or anything in between.
Platte Valley's defense bottled up the Reds offense, forcing five turnovers, not allowing an offensive touchdown and surrendering just 87 total yards in a 44-7 Class 2A Patriot League win on Friday.
“The defense had a great, great plan against (Eaton),” Broncos coach Mike DeWall said. “We needed to change up coverages on their quarterbacks and not give them whatever you showed them; pre-snap is not what you're going to be in post-snap. But still try to figure out a way to get a lot of pressure (on them), and I think (defensive coordinator) Troy (Hoffman) did a wonderful job of that. And, the kids, they were prepared. They worked hard.”
With the win, Platte Valley (2-0 2A Patriot, 4-1 overall) kept pace with Weld Central (2-0, 4-1) and Strasburg (2-0, 5-0) for the league lead. The Reds (0-2, 0-5), on the other hand, are likely in a scenario where they have to win the rest of their games just to have a chance at a third straight playoff bid.
The Broncos quickly put themselves in position to deny Eaton its first win.
Platte Valley took a 23-0 halftime lead behind three second-quarter touchdowns — on 7- and 16-yard runs by senior quarterback Jordan Smith and a 7-yard run by senior Seth Baladez.
Before the night was over, Smith had five touchdown runs, carrying the ball 12 times for 115 yards and completing 4-of-14 passes for 88 yards. The Broncos offense frequently capitalized on short field position, rushing 50 times for 174 yards.
Smith said, at least at times, the Platte Valley looked sharper than it has at any point through the first five weeks of the season.
“We came out in the third quarter, when we usually go three-and-out, but not (Friday),” Smith said. “We (seniors) looked at this game as our last time to ever play Eaton. We're big rivals, and we just stuck it to them. We made sure that we didn't hold anything back.”
Eaton ran the ball 20 times for just 3 yards, including minus-20 on nine carries in the first half. With his favorite target, sophomore tight end Darin Foss sidelined with a concussion, Reds junior quarterback Tony Ball completed 4-of-16 passes for just 37 yards with two interceptions before leaving in the third quarter with a neck strain.
His replacement, sophomore Jaden Olearnick, had similar struggles against the Broncos' dominant defense, completing 3-of-17 passes 47 yards.
Eaton coach Bill Mondt praised Olearnick for showing solid poise in his impromptu stint at quarterback. Still, Mondt said it was otherwise a rough day offensively for his Reds, which came in averaging 22.8 points per game.
“We couldn't move the ball, we couldn't block them very well, then we fumbled two punts, fumbled a bad snap and just gave away a lot of points,” Mondt said. “But they still played better than we did.”
Although Baladez found his way into the end zone with his second-quarter plunge right up the middle in the second quarter, he spends much more of his time and energy on the football field making sure opposing players stay out of the end zone. As a linebacker, the 5-foot-11, 190-pound Baladez is one of the anchors of Platte Valley's brick wall defense.
Eaton had just three first downs and rushed for minus-6 yards and passed for just 37 through three quarters.
“We knew that the defense was going to be able to stop them and hold them,” Baladez said. “I was confident that they weren't going to score a lot. All week, we worked real hard in all our pass coverages. Our coach (Hoffman) does a great job of preparing us for all these games.” |

The Keys Turning point: With Brush driving in Platte Valley territory, Broncos senior linebacker Aaron Olson recovered a Beetdiggers fumble on the Platte Valley 26. The Broncos drove 74 yards to score on the ensuing possession to record the first points and gain the momentum. Best individual performer: Olson was a force defensively, recovering the aforementioned fumble, piling up tackles — including back-to-back tackles for zero and negative-1 yards on Platte Valley's first goal line stand — and in general, wrecking havoc on the Brush offense. What it means: Going into another big rivalry game against Eaton next week, Platte Valley has early momentum on its side en route to what it hopes will be its first league title. Brush lost for the fourth time in four games with three losses against top 10 teams in 2A and 3A. |

Faith Christian 16, Platte Valley 13, OT: In Arvada, the Broncos' hard-fought effort against the second-ranked Eagles ended in defeat, and the Broncos dropped to 2-1 this season.
On the Broncos' possession in overtime, they attempted a third-down pass that Platte Valley coach Mike DeWall said was “closely defended.” It fell incomplete, and the Broncos settled for a Raechel Teckler field goal.
On the Eagles possession, the Eagles' pass attempt fell incomplete by was deemed to be “too closely defended,” DeWall said. Two plays later after the penalty, Oran Tool scored on a 5-yard run.
The Broncos forced four fumbles against the Eagles, which were averaging more than 40 points per game entering the game. DeWall lauded the play of nose tackle Derek Naibauer, linebacker Seth Baladez and linebacker Aaron Olson |

Kersey — The Platte Valley football team is off to an impressive 2-0 start after a 52-6 victory against Denver Christian on Friday night.
Platte Valley senior quarterback Jordan Smith ran for four touchdowns and threw for two more. Senior running back Clay Flot amassed 81 yards on 10 carries, but it was the Broncos' stifling defense that made the biggest impact.
The Broncos allowed just 27 rushing yards, and most of those yards came on Denver Christian's touchdown drive late in the fourth. Before the drive, the Crusaders had negative rushing yards.
Platte Valley coach Mike DeWall said senior linebacker Aaron Olson and senior linebacker Seth Baladez helped control the middle.
The Broncos have started 2-0 face a big test next week at 2-0 Faith Christian. |
