Another year of wondering what I need to do to get a shot.......

I averaged over 9 tackles a game on the JV team.  I was the uncrowned captain of the defense on a team that pitched two shutouts.  I played the last four games with a high ankle sprain that sidelines most everyone at least two to three weeks, I only missed the final two quarters of the game I sprained it in and was back at practice on Tuesday.  I filled in at offensive guard when a lineman was lost for the year.  I repeatedly do what's asked of me and yet I never get a sniff of varsity time on a team that averaged giving up 30+ points a game and can't stop the run.  It's very discouraging to continue to practice and play in front of 100 people and feel like not only could I play, but upgrade the defense of our program.  I still do.  Becuase I am dedicated to the program and I love the game of football.

What sucks is that who is going to want to recruit a guy who can't crack his own varsity lineup??  Please don't hold it against me because it is becoming increasingly clear to me that politics play a huge part in who plays and who doesn't.....guys that I have beat on since grade school continue to play, make mistakes and poorly execute but are never held accountable for their actions............

But I will be there the first day of conditioning and ready to go.......

It could definitely be better........

I am currently nursing a high ankle sprain and am day to day.

Not seeing squat on varsity even though I am averaging double figures in tackles and until i got hurt we had six consecutive shutout quarters.  I am bothered by it but obviously it hasn't side tracked me and my goals.  I guess my time will come, its just a matter of when.

The school year is almost over............

Training will kick into gear after "Lift-a-thon" next week, I am planning on getting 1100 lbs. total.........

I have committed to a three day camp at the University of Cincinnati, and a one day skills camp at Ohio University, both in June.  I have gone to the UC camp the last couple of years as a LB, but this year I am going as a TE/WR.

I have already been offered a couple of game visits this fall and I am looking forward to those to get a chance to check those schools out.  I was invited to, and attended, Cincinnati vs. Syracuse last fall and watched them clinch the Big East Championship.  That was cool.  My uncle also took me to watch Ohio State vs. Penn State, that was a remarkable setting but a bummer of a result.

I am soooooooo ready to get the season under way and look forward to hearing from more schools and coaches because I WILL play football at the next level and one school will be glad that they made an investment in Chris Ashburn, not only as a football player but a
student-athlete.

Next up........Track and Field

Posted By: Christopher Ashburn on 2009-03-05 21:26:48 ESTEmail Story  |  Flag As Spam  |  Comments (0)

Next week starts track and field season.  I am planning on running the 100, 200, and throwing the shot.  Another season of being too big to be a sprinter, and too small for field events.  So here I go doing both....so I can help the team.  I want to do sprints to increase my burst and to continue to lower my forty time.  My plan is to get my forty in the 4.6 to 4.7 range, that seems to be a good range for my goal of be a WR of Safety in college.

Guess only time will tell.........

How my dream may be difficult to realize.......

I am never going to be 225 lbs, I am not going to be able to bench press 300 lbs, so how may I ask am I going to be able to realize my dream of playing college football?  Heart!

I am 5'11" and 165 lbs, with long arms and as one of my coaches put it "a motor that doesn't quit".  I spent last year on JV playing left tackle, yes, a skinny tackle.  Why?  Because I have heart.  I will play wherever the coaches tell me and not think twice.  I can stop 250-300 pound defense ends long enough to get an opening for my teammate.
The coaches actually pulled a starting varsity defensive lineman off the left tackle spot because I could out play him.  Our other lineman range between 205 and 240 lbs, and we went 5-1-3 and won our division with my skinny butt as the left tackle.  So obviously, we held our own.

I got to see action on the varsity squad in the fourth quarter against Xenia's varsity defense.  We ran a sweep to the right where I pulled across and wiped out the OLB and we gained 17 yards.  We ran an off right tackle run for 4 yards.  We ran the sweep again.  Same OLB, similar result - OLB flat on his butt - gain of 31 yards to the 7 yard line.  Run off the left side = TD!  That was quite a rush.

Why should any school look at skinny ol' me?  Good grades.  Ambition.  No drama.  No trouble. Tradition.  PHS has 7 alumni playing D1 football.  We were the Ohio Division 2 State Champs in 2006.  We produced Ohio's Mr. Football in 2006 (Brandon Saine - OSU).

I want to play collegiate football and truly feel that I am worthy of recruitment..........

What's in store for 2009

Posted By: Christopher Ashburn on 2009-02-15 19:32:19 ESTEmail Story  |  Flag As Spam  |  Comments (0)

This is the year to get my name out there.  I need to supplant myself as a force at the varsity level, because I am closer to being put into a position that I am more suited for.  Enough of me being the skinny kid placed on the offensive line because I can block a guy that outweighs me by 100 pounds.  Yes, seriously, I have been a lineman for the past two years despite weighing 154 lbs.

It is time that I split time as a TE or an inside WR on offense and either LB or S on defense.  After battling the fatties, I can't wait to wipeout guys more my size.  I have been conditioning hard, increasing my foot speed, and planning for a couple of camps this summer.

It is time to start working toward college!
