Eh, not such a great meet for me.  After a long state meet last weekend, and then an early start for my zone meet (open water and 400 relays were on Wednesday), I was really, really, really tired.  After what I believe was a great 2 mile open water swim (for me, at least), I wasn't too far off of my times on Wednesday or Thursday, but by the 200 IM on Friday, I was really hurting.  Enough said, here's the results from the meet...

Wednesday, August 6
2 Mile Open Water
31 place - 41:24.94

400 Medley Relay, 400 Free Relay
Relay splits were not recorded.

Thursday, August 7
100 Freestyle
115 place - 58.77 (Die)

100 Breaststroke - Prelims
6 place - 1:10.53 (Build)

100 Breaststroke - Finals
6 place - 1:09.64 (Fly & Die)

Friday, August 8
200 Individual Medley
68 place - 2:26.64

P.S.: Because of the chase starts that were used during the meet, the Colorado System had the split-capture-feature-thingy disabled.  Not like I want to see my splits, anyways.

Wisconsin Summer State '08 - What a meet!

Posted By: Tyler Remmel on 2008-08-04 21:55:22 ESTEmail Story  |  Flag As Spam  |  Comments (0)

Usually, a great meet is defined by an overall aptitute for best times.  This weekend, I only had a modest 50 percent best time ratio, but the meet will be regarded in my mind as one of, if not the best meet of my career thus far.  You see, I can't argue with the time drops in the events in which I did drop time.  The 50 Freestyle: a .7 second drop from my pre-meet best time.  The 50 Breaststroke relay split: at least a 1.5 second drop from my previous best.  The 100 Breaststroke: a 1.8 second drop from pre-meet.    The 200 IM: nearly a 5 second drop from my previous best time.  And finally, the meet winner in terms of total seconds dropped - the 200 Freestyle relay split: more than a 6 second drop from my best time established 5 weeks ago.

The kicker: coming into the meet, I was not going for any particular cuts with my swims.  After the weekend has passed, I have one more sectional cut, along with boasting a valiant effort to capture a summer Junior Nationals berth in my 100 Breaststroke.  Not bad if I do say so myself.  Although, after the first night - when I swam a crazy fast (for me) 200 Free on the 800 Free relay - I knew it was going to be a great weekend for me.  I simply felt too energized, pumped up, and competitive to let anything keep me from swimming only my best.

Although it was a great meet, there are a few things that linger in my mind.  Particularly, I do wish that I could have swam the 200 Breast as a 200, because after seeing my breast split of my finals 200 IM, I know that I can have a best time in that as well.  But, there still are time trials at MegaZones next weekend.  In addition to that - after swimming the 100 Breast an essential total of 5 times in a two day span - I really felt in tune with my body.  That said, I mentioned to the coaches that I would be willing to do more sculling next season, as my forearms seemed like a weak point by the fifth time swimming the 100 Breast.  But, that's a latter matter.  I still have Zones to worry about this week.  Then I can truly write a reflection of the season...a post-season reflection.

2008 Speedo Champions Series - Brown Deer, WI

Posted By: Tyler Remmel on 2008-07-17 16:43:21 ESTEmail Story  |  Flag As Spam  |  Comments (0)

Today was the start of the SCS meet at the Walter Schroeder Aquatic Center in Brown Deer, WI.  My only individual event is the 100 Breaststroke on Saturday, but I will also be swimming on the LAKE-WI 400 Free "A" Relay.  I am unsure at the moment, but I also may be swimming in the LAKE-WI 400 Medley "A" Relay (breaststroke).  I'll be sure to post my results as soon as they become available to me.  Click here to link to the meet results.

Day 1 (July 17):
No swims today.

Day 2 (July 18):
Anchor leg of the 400 LCM Free Relay.

Splits: 26.65   56.52r (29.87)

Notes: I was amazed with the results of this swim.  I went out only a tenth over my best time in the 50 (26.54), and that's with a foot finish.  Unfortunately, I died a bit at the end of the race, but still managed to pull out a swim nearly two seconds faster than my personal best (58.43).  As I right this, I am guessing that I might have trouble sleeping adequately tonight: I'm really, really, really excited to see how I do in my 100 Breast tomorrow.  I'm swimming fast, and I'm going to try using a legskin for breast for the first time of my career.

Day 3 (July 19):

 100 Breaststroke:
Splits: 33.66   1:10.62 (36.96)

Notes: Again, looking at the scoreboard gave me a feeling of sheer awe.  My goal in this swim was to be in the 1:10's, and I did that easily.  I'm not sure how to distribute the percentages, but here's a few of the reasons that my time was as fast as it was: my training, my persistence, my goal-orientation, and my suit (legskin).  Unfortunately, I failed to qualify for finals, finishing in a tie for 35 place.  However, I was only about a half second away from getting a second swim in this.  Another bonus of this swim: I am set up to go sub-1:10 on the 400 Medley relay tomorrow morning, which I am, again, looking forward to.  Thus far, the meet has been close to the meet of my career (thus far), so all I need to do is carry that into the final day of the meet.  In two weeks, when 13 & Over State rolls around, I'd like to see what this momentum will do to my times.

Day 4 (July 20):

400 Medley Relay - Breaststroke:
Splits: 33.01   1:10.40 (37.39)

Notes: It was really assuring to back up the time that I went in the 100 Breast on Saturday (July 19) with this relay swim.  Besides that, it was just another great swim in what has become a pretty stellar weekend of swimming.  Definitely a successful meet in my books.

WGLO, SEAY State/Non-State Meet Results

Posted By: Tyler Remmel on 2008-07-06 13:23:59 ESTEmail Story  |  Flag As Spam  |  Comments (0)

Here's my event-by-event results from the annual WGLO meet, held at the Walter Schroeder Aquatic Center (50M) on June 27-29.  FYI: I was 21 in the high point for the meet with 34 total points from my six scored events.

50M Free
Seed: 26.65
Prelims: 26.54
Finals: 26.71

200M Free
Seed: 2:15.54
Prelims: 2:14.00

1500M Free
Seed: 19:55.32
Timed Finals: 19:48.92

100M Back
Seed: 1:09.98
Prelims: 1:09.39

100M Breast
Seed: 1:13.40
Prelims: 1:12.49
Finals: 1:12.84

200M Breast
Seed: 2:49.23
Prelims: 2:45.16
Finals:
2:45.90

200M IM
Seed: 2:33.92
Prelims: 2:26.04
Finals: 2:23.39 [splits: FL-  29.70; BK- 40.00; BR- 40.76; FR- 32.93]

Overall, WGLO was a very successful meet for me.  Final-ing in four of six possible events, at least one best time in each event I swam (well, the 200 Breast wasn't really a best time, but we'll count it), and I began this meet after being back in the water for four days after a week off.

One thing that was a real surprise for me was the 200 IM.  In one day, I managed to take off over 10 seconds from my previous best time, and that came with a backstroke split that was nearly slower than the breast split.  I'm swimming this event next weekend at the SEAY State/Non-State meet, and the 200 IM was supposed to be an attempt at the state cut at this meet, but now I plan on aiming at the Speedo cut.  I should see nearly the same time drops in short course, so the SCS cut should not be too much of a problem.  In addition to the 200 IM, I will also be going for the Speedo cut in the 50 Free at this meet.

And so the non-championship long course season is completed.  The only LCM meets left for me are Speedos (July 17-20), 13 & Over State (July 31-August 3), and MegaZones (August 6-10).

Here's the results from my swims at the SEAY State/Non-State Meet on July 13: 50 Freestyle: 22.97, 200 IM: 2:05.81.  Overall, this was a very successful meet.  In the 50 free, I was only two tenths over my best time, not weak at all after a non-rest meet (in fact, before this meet, we had five straight days of morning practice, so sleep was at a minimum).  Even better was the 200 IM, an event which I not only won, but shaved about five seconds from my previous best.

SSTY Sprint/Distance, BST Sunshine: Results and More...

Posted By: Tyler Remmel on 2008-06-03 20:42:38 ESTEmail Story  |  Flag As Spam  |  Comments (0)

This may be coming in a little later than I had anticipated, but here are some results if anyone is looking for them:

SSTY Sprint/Distance Meet - May 18
  • 50m Fly - 29.98
  • 50m Back - 32.09
  • 50m Breast - 33.49
  • 50m Free - 26.65
Overall, a very good meet for me, especially for the first time swimming long course so far this season. It's not too often where you get the opportunity to swim stroke 50's, but early in the season, I like them as a chance to gauge my sprint progress for the season. I treated the stroke 50's less as a 50m sprint, but rather as trying to maintain a speed that I feel I can hold for a 100. Therefore, approximate 100 times can be extrapolated from most of these "splits." All were lifetime bests (somewhat obvious), and all allude to what should be a good season for my sprints.

The only time that is significant from this meet in terms of cuts is my 50m Free. In fact, with that swim, I managed to get the LCM cuts for both State and Zones (the zone cut was actually .1 seconds slower than the state cut in this event). So, now I've got those cuts out of the way (finally; after about 5 swims around but above 27.0 in that event), and I can set my sights on taking off the additional second that I need to get the Speedo Sectionals cut in this event.

BST Sunshine Invitational - May 30 & June 1
  • 100m Fly - 1:06.61
  • 100m Back - 1:09.98
  • 100m Breast - 1:15.87
  • 100m Free - 58.43
Again, it was a sprinter's schedule for me, but this time I went for the 100's, maintaining my success of the previous meet. In fact, in this meet, I was actually more successful. This is surprising, especially because I just found out before this meet that I have been troubled with Patellofemoral Syndrome (look it up on WebMD for details) for the past few months, which has prevented me for the most part from kicking at all during practice. In fact, in the time that I have been in the pool (stupid swim bench and VASAs), more than half has probably been spent pulling with a buoy and elastic band. Fortunately, physical therapy, which begins this week, should get rid of the problem in only a few weeks (thank goodness). But anyways, to end my divergence...

The headline of the day (in my mind) was the 100m Free. Not only did I take off over two seconds from my previous best, or that I finally got my long course State cut in this event, but I even went under the Zone cut as well. Converted, this is an all-course lifetime best by at least .5 seconds. I can't wait until I swim this again once I can start "kicking" again.

The only time this weekend that wasn't a best for me was my 100m Breast. Although, that can be expected when I've kicked all of about 500 yards of breaststroke kick (in swimming and kicking combined) in the past month or so. Once I get back into using my legs without pain, this time will easily penetrate the 1:13.0 point (and I have no intentions to stop there).

My next meet will be at the preliminary-final Western Great Lakes Open at the end of June. In fact, the BST Sunshine was the last meet of my season that won't be in a prelim-final format. Heck, I only have three or four more meets before this season is over (boy, that stinks).

For now, that should do it. I will try to update the progress of the physical therapy (my first appointment is Wednesday, June 4) as often as I can.
