Heidelberg’s Thomas Hogue scored a late touchdown and the decisive extra point as the Lions pulled out a 14-13 victory over previously unbeaten Vilseck on Saturday.

The visiting Lions got their opportunity for the final score when Wayne Dawkins shot through the center of the Vilseck line to block a punt with 2:51 to play. The Lions took over on the Vilseck 30 and mounted a short scoring drive that ended with a four-yard run by Hogue.

Hogue, who finished as the game’s leading rusher with 105 yards on 22 carries, then kicked the extra point that proved the margin of victory for Heidelberg (2-1, 1-0 in I-South).

After a scoreless first quarter, Vilseck (2-1, 0-1) took a 7-0 lead with 10:36 to play when Tyler Hall hit Jamal Grant with a 26-yard touchdown pass. Napolian Myhand ran for a 19-yard touchdown, and Hogue kicked the extra point to make it 7-7 at the half. Vilseck’s Kalyn Smithson went over from 11 yards out to cap the Falcons’ opening drive of the second half, but Vilseck was stymied for the rest of the game by the Heidelberg defense. Both teams missed third-quarter field-goal attempts to set up the end-of-game dramatics.

Angelo Anderson led Vilseck with 60 yards on 15 rushes. Hall was 5 of 10 for 68 yards and a TD.

The victory put Heidelberg in great position in the race for the I-South championship and the home-field edge in the D-I semifinals. The Lions are scheduled to play an exhibition game Saturday against a team from the Hague, then host Patch and travel to Wiesbaden to close the regular season. Vilseck’s remaining I-South games are at home this Saturday against Wiesbaden and at Patch on Oct. 24.

Ramstein Royals (7-0) versus Defending D1 Champions Heidelberg Lions (6-1)

Heidelberg’s only loss came at the hands of Ramstein.  Ramstein, although a much larger school, is  in a rebuilding year. The Royals have built a fast, mobile defense with a quick defensive line and an explosive offense, featuring Michael Wallace, Will Canfield and several other talented athletes. Heidelberg features a top running back in Thomas Hogue and strong QB play from Jimmy Montfleury. Heidelberg, traditionally, plays solid defense. Based on recent history, you can throw out previous games. Usually, these two teams play a nail-biter and the outcome is not decided until the last few minutes. Expect a great game from these two old-time rivals!!!

I played only the first half.

European Division I H.S. football: Heidelberg turns back Wiesbaden to win title

Thomas Hogue ran for 153 yards and two touchdowns Saturday as the visiting Heidelberg Lions sewed up the Division I-South title with a 31-21 victory over Wiesbaden.

The outcome means that defending European D-I champion Heidelberg (5-1) will play host to II-South runner-up Vilseck on Saturday in a European Division I semifinal game.

Wiesbaden (3-3) will journey to Ramstein to take on the unbeaten Royals in Saturday’s other semifinal.

The winners will clash at Baumholder on Nov. 7 for the European D-I title.

Hogue made most of his yardage on one play, a 90-yard touchdown run on a third-and-15 play in the first half, which ended with Heidelberg leading 13-7.

The Lions, leading 25-21 in the final quarter, put the game away by scoring at the end of a long drive.

Heidelberg quarterback Jimmy Montfleury ran 12 times for 84 yards and two TDs, and teammate Sterling Jones added 94 yards and a touchdown on 16 carries.

That was enough to overcome a monster outing by Wiesbaden sophomore running back Daniel Harris, who scored three times in denting the Heidelberg defense for 201 yards on 26 rushes.

“Tyrece Davis made most of the holes for Harris,” Wiesbaden coach Steve Jewell said Saturday of Harris’ backfield mate, who carried 13 times for 50 yards.

“He blocked like a man-child. He must have flattened six or seven Heidelberg defenders.”

Wiesbaden quarterback Ryan Reagin completed one of three pass attempts, that to Antonio Treywick for 47 yards.

Thomas Murphree led Wiesbaden with 12 tackles, and Harris chipped in with 10.

Roundup: Some familiar faces advance to Super Six

This Saturday’s Super Six European football championship tripleheader will have a familiar look, at least at the top, after unbeaten Ramstein and Heidelberg claimed the Division I slots, Ansbach and Bitburg grabbed the D-II berths, and Menwith Hill and Alconbury won the right to play for the D-III crown with Saturday semifinal victories.

Division I

Heidelberg 36, Vilseck 12: At Heidelberg, Thomas Hogue rushed 27 times for 221 yards and two touchdowns for the defending D-I champions. He also kicked four extra points and ran for a two-point conversion as the Lions (6-1) rolled.

Heidelberg rushed for 323 yards in a game it led 22-6 at halftime. Vilseck’s Angelo Anderson returned the second-half kickoff 95 yards for a TD, but Heidelberg countered with a scoring drive to re-establish its edge.

Heidelberg quarterback Jimmy Montfleury ran for TDs of 1 and 12 yards and threw a TD pass of 24 yards to Napolian Myhand.

The Lions’ defense victimized Vilseck (4-3) for three turnovers — interceptions by Devin Helvie and Jacobi Satsatin and a fumble recovery by Darius Dixon. Myhand had eight tackles for the Lions, two for losses, and Wayne Dawkins included two tackles for losses and a sack among his six stops. Devin Jackson forced a fumble and made seven tackles.

Vilseck’s first-half TD came on a 1-yard plunge by quarterback Tyler Hall.
