CIF GIRLS VOLLEYBALL: Whittier Christian sweeps host Viewpoint

By Andrew J. Campa, Staff Writer Posted: 11/17/2009 10:36:46 PM PST
CALABASAS - Last year, Cinderella was a small, defensive-minded team out of north Orange County that relied on grit and execution. This season, Cinderella, aka the Whittier Christian High School girls volleyball team, returned to the scene of its biggest win tall, muscular and determined. Those three traits proved unbeatable as the Heralds (26-2) swept host Viewpoint 25-21, 25-15, 25-15 in Tuesday night's CIF-SS semifinal match.

The victory sends the Heralds to their second consecutive championship match at Cypress College. The time and day should be announced today. Whittier Christian will face either No. 2 seeded St. Margaret's (24-2) or Condor League champion Laguna Blanca (14-1). "We were ready for this game. We wanted it so much more," said Heralds senior libero Emily Atwood, who finished with a team-high 12 digs. "We're a lot better than last year. We expect to win." Whittier Christian, which has yet to drop a game this postseason, no longer resembled the team that used five games to upset No. 2-seeded Viewpoint last season. In fact, the Heralds were only challenged in Game 1 in which the Patriots (15-4) held a lead as late as 16-15 and were tied 19-19. The game-changing play happened at 19-all when Heralds senior Rebecca Shafer slammed a kill of an assist from setter Stephanie Sinohui (32 assists and eight aces) that landed out of bounds. The hit was initially called an error but reversed by the line judge, who ruled the ball had been tipped. The Heralds were given the point and did not look back, converting the next four points on two Patriots errors coupled with a Shafer block and an ace by Sinohui. While the Patriots rallied for two points, they gave away their best game on a centerline violation. "This is pretty much what I expected when I got here," said Shafer, a senior transfer. "The strength of this team is all around. We just don't rely on one person." Shafer led the team in Game 1 with four kills and two blocks en route to connecting on six kills and four blocks.

In Game 2, junior outside Hannah Nabbout (six kills and seven digs) played pacesetter, first serving successfully on a 9-0 Heralds run that gave the visitors a 15-7 advantage. Nabbout eventually connected on a kill that put the Heralds up 23-15 before Sinohui provided the knockout punch with back-to-back aces. In Game 3, freshman Joy Miley shined. The 6-foot-1 outside hitter hammered a game-high seven kills. Miley finished with a match-high 11 kills. The match-closing honors went again to Atwood, who served, and senior Erin White, who flushed home the final point on a kill. "I ended last year's match and I got to do it again," said an ecstatic White, who finished with eight kills and six digs. "Hopefully, we can keep this going one more match."

Heralds aim for return to finals

Posted: 11/16/2009 08:24:59 PM PST

Despite what would seem to be similar circumstances, the Whittier Christian girls volleyball team isn't taking anything for granted. If the Daily News' top-ranked Heralds (25-2) hope to advance to their second consecutive CIF-Southern Section Division 4AA title match this weekend, they will need to get past a familiar foe on the road at Viewpoint (15-3) of Calabasas tonight at 7 in the semifinals. "It's a lot different this time than last," Heralds junior Hannah Nabbout said. "There is more pressure on us this time but that's OK." The Heralds and Liberty League champion Patriots met in last season's semifinal under different circumstances. Viewpoint was ranked second and entered the match 23-1. Whittier Christian, on the other hand, was the Cinderella team which just clinched its first-ever Alpha League title two weeks early. "Our goal last season was to win league," Heralds coach Shawn Hunter said. "Everything accomplished after that was a bonus." Despite losing the first two games, the Heralds rallied for a 16-25, 21-25, 25-23, 25-12, 15-12 win in a battle of attrition. Patriots outside hitter Brooke Berka dominated the first two games with 16 kills. The Heralds' defense, however, wore out the 5-foot-11 outside hitter, who connected on six kills over the final three games. Nabbout, on the other hand, strengthened throughout the match in posting a team-high 17 kills and 18 digs. Nabbout was one of five Heralds with 10 or more digs. Stephanie Sinohui led with 24. The Heralds' serve is sharper this time as well, as Whittier Christian connected for 12 aces against six service errors in Saturday's quarterfinal sweep over Mary Star of the Sea. "We've been working on serving all year," Sinohui said. "We're a lot better this year than last." Maybe the biggest difference is on offense. Hunter classified his squad as a "defensive team" last year, but this season the offense has caught up. The Heralds have four players with three-plus kills-per-game capabilities in Nabbout, junior Arika Zwack, senior Erin White and freshman Joy Miley. Add the improved offense of middle blocker Rebecca Shafer, who posted seven kills and three blocks on Saturday, and the Heralds are tough to defend. "We're a lot more balanced," Hunter said. "Our girls can also put away the ball and aren't afraid of any specific team." andrew.campa@sgvn.com (562) 698-0955, Ext. 3061

Whittier Christian earns berth in CIF semifinals

By Andrew J. Campa, Staff Writer Posted: 11/14/2009 09:49:56 PM PST

LA HABRA - It's on to the CIF-Southern Section semifinals for the Whittier Christian girls volleyball team. The Heralds (25-2) made quick work of a young Mary Star of the Sea, defeating the visiting Stars 25-10, 25-20, 25-13 in Saturday evening's CIF-SS Division 4AA quarterfinals at the Leon Davis Event Center. The victory moves the Heralds, top- ranked in their division, to Tuesday's semifinal against either Viewpoint of Calabasas or Sage Hill of Newport Beach, on the road. It seemed early like Whittier Christian couldn't wait for the next round. The Heralds opened Game 1 with an impressive 12-0 run that seemed to sap the emotion out of Mary Star (12-5), the Camino Real League champ. Junior middle blocker Arika Zwack converted three aces during the streak. "It was cool. I haven't seen that in awhile," said Zwack, who finished with nine kills. "We were so ready for this game. We were in our element." While the Stars eventually broke through with a kill from Emily Banas, they never recovered in Game 1. Zwack moved the Heralds to game point on spike set up off an assist from Stephanie Sinohui. Mary Star then ended the game on the next play when Rikki Sena's kill attempt sailed out of bounds. While the Stars ended two of three games with attacking errors, the Heralds opened each set with a kill from junior outside hitter Hannah Nabbout. "I've been practicing as many shots at practice as possible," said Nabbout, who posted 10 digs. "I honestly wasn't thinking about starting the game with a kill." Nabbout led all scorers with 11 kills and also tallied two aces. Her kill through the dig attempt of Erica Bender put Whittier Christian up 20-13 in Game 3. Two possessions later, Nabbout delivered a sinking ace that a diving Bender was unable to dig. Eventually, the Heralds' Erin White ended the match with a kill that was dug straight out of bounds. About the only time the Heralds ran into trouble was late in Game 2. Whittier Christian built a 23-15 lead thanks to a Zwack block off Michelle Ferrigno that was followed by an ace from White. The Stars rebounded, however, behind a Heralds centerline violation that preceded two aces from Banas and a block from Lindsey Colbert that brought Mary Star to within 23-20. "We didn't finish well," Heralds coach Shawn Hunter said. "We had five mis-serves in Game 2 and we just decided to not go out there and finish. "That's something that we need to work on. When we get a lead, we need to put it away." Mary Star stunted its momentum, giving up the game on back-to-back errors. Whittier Christian freshman Joy Miley added eight kills, while Sinohui posted 42 assists and 12 digs and Emily Atwood finished with nine digs. andrew.campa@sgvn.com (562) 698-0955, Ext. 3061

We play Viewpoint Again Tuesday Nov 24, 2009.  They asked for a rematch well they got it.  We are very excited to play them again.

GIRLS VOLLEYBALL: Whittier Christian, La Serna lone area teams left standing

By Andrew J. Campa, Staff Writer

The area is down to its final two girls volleyball teams, and for the second consecutive year, they are Whittier Christian and La Serna high schools.

The Lancers and Heralds were the area's two hottest teams down the stretch and have remained so heading into tonight's CIF-Southern Section divisional quarterfinals.

While the Lancers have revenge on their minds, it will be different for Whittier Christian (24-2).

The Heralds were geared for a rematch with Calvary Murrieta, which defeated them in last year's Division 4AA title match, 3-1. But the Warriors were stopped by Mary Star of the Sea in Thursday's second round, 3-1.

"We're excited to play whomever," Whittier Christian coach Shawn Hunter said. "The advantage of playing Calvary is that we've seen them before this season."

The Heralds host the Stars (12-4) at 7 tonight.

"We're playing an opponent that we've never seen before, so there's definitely an adjustment period," Hunter said. "We're just going to have to go out and compete."

The Heralds are rolling, have won an area-best 13 consecutive matches.

Whittier Christian also is healthy for the first time in a while.

Middle blocker Arika Zwack was welcomed back from illness in Thursday's 3-0 second-round victory over visiting Ontario Christian. Zwack, who had missed playing time during the final week of the regular season, posted six kills and three blocks.

VOLLEYBALL PLAYOFFS: Heralds earn top seed

By Andrew J. Campa, Staff Writer

While the Whittier area may be in a down year for girls volleyball, seven of the local teams still qualified for the CIF-Southern Section divisional playoffs, which begin regionally on Tuesday.

Only one area squad earned a divisional top seed at Sunday's CIF-SS pairings release, and that was the Daily News' top-ranked Whittier Christian (23-2).

The Heralds are seeded No. 1 in Division 4-AA and earned a bye into Thursday's second round.

Whittier Christian advanced to the divisional championship match last season before falling to Calvary Murrieta, 3-1.

Whittier Christian begins its journey back by entertaining either the Sunkist League's Patriot or Christian League No.3 Ontario Christian.

Senior setter and team captain Stephanie Sinohui, who is averaging 9.5 assists and three digs per game, has helped Whittier Christian High School win an Alpha League championship and compile 23-2 overall record heading into the CIF - Southern Section playoffs.

HIGH SCHOOLS: Sinohui sparks Whittier Christian

By Andrew J. Campa, Staff WriterPosted: 11/09/2009 08:48:58 PM PST
LA HABRA - Trying to describe the offense of the Whittier Christian girls volleyball team is like attempting to make sense of a hurricane. There are constant, thunderous blows delivered by 6-foot-1 outside hitter Joy Miley and 5-10 opposite Erin White. Middle blockers Arika Zwack and Rebecca Shafer present a near impenetrable wall at the front while junior outside Hannah Nabbout has become known for her lightning quick kills. The offense wouldn't be nearly as potent without a strong base. Standing in the eye of the hurricane is the team's calming center, senior setter Stephanie Sinohui. The 5-foot-6 La Habra resident also has found the complex offense difficult to control at times, even though she's in charge. "I've learned over the last few years that you have to be flexible and go with what works," Sinohui said. "You can't just feed one girl. "You have to spread out the passes and the offense to make it as difficult as possible to defend against." Sinohui, a Daily News' second-team all-area selection last year, has some strong statistic this year. She's averaging 9.5 assists, three digs and one ace per game. "Being a senior is both sad and amazing," Sinohui said. "Since this is my last year, I feel an extra duty to try to go above and beyond and help my teammates in any way." Her biggest contribution, however, has been her decision-making. "She's the one who gets the offense going," Heralds coach Shawn Hunter said. "She just doesn't get the ball to her teammates. She puts them in a position to succeed." The Heralds definitely have exceeded expectations this season by winning a program-best 23 matches against only two defeats. The Heralds also completed their first undefeated run through the Alpha League. Such achievements have created a buzz, but Sinohui is quick to take a step back. "I know there are a lot of expectations on this team," Sinohui said. "But really, the best thing to do is to worry about each match. We can't look too far ahead." That's becoming an increasingly difficult task, however, as the Heralds recently were made the No. 1 seed in the CIF-Southern Section Division 4AA playoffs. Just in case that wasn't enough, the Heralds have possible showdowns with three squads they faced in last year's postseason, including with defending divisional champion Calvary Murrieta in Saturday's quarterfinals. That's the same Calvary team that knocked off Whittier Christian, 3-1, in last year's title match. "I know a lot of the girls on the team are talking about CIF titles and a state championship but I'm not ready to talk about that," Sinohui said. "It's not that I don't believe we can reach those goals. It's that there are a lot of steps we have to take before we can get there."

It's Sinohui's maturity that Hunter credits with helping keep his team grounded. "Last year's playoff experience benefitted her well," Hunter said. "She learned about how difficult it was to reach a title game last year and about how much work we still have left." andrew.campa@sgvn.com (562) 698-0955, Ext. 3061
