Our team this fall has 2 Sophomores and the rest of us are Freshmen! We are really getting the team together and have started winning! This is some footage from last week's matches. This week, we've been working hard on getting more quicks going and working on our timing. I'm sure you all know that with a brand new team, it doesn't always come instantly! We've been working hard and we're ready to let everyone see how far we've come!
Saturday night in Oxnard, CA, the Santa Monica College volleyball team had their first decisive win of the season! With a team dominated by Freshman, we could all see and feel the potential but we were busy working out the kinks. Yesterday it all came together with a big win over Oxnard College. Game footage of the team will be up in just a couple days!
New video will be up soon! We have 3 matches this week and my mom is here to watch us play so that means I'll have fresh tape up by the end of this week!
As a setter, if you can't lead a team, you are in trouble. As one a whole bunch of new girls on my JUCO team, I needed to gain the trust of my coaches and my team mates. We can have all of the awesome practices in the world but when it comes to an actual game, we need to make things happen. As the new guy (or girl in this case) I didn't want to step on toes. I wanted to work hard at practice and earn a starting spot on the team. Yesterday, at our tournament, we started the day with a 6-2 offense and lost our first two matches. Going into the third match, our coaches decided to try something different. They went back to a 5-1 and let me run with it. Our other setter went to the DS position....and then things started to work! It was the beginning of the AH HA moment. We didn't win that third match but all of the sudden everyone was going..."Hey, this works!". We went to the play off round with the same line up and WON our next two matches! It was magical. We all participated in a huge evolution yesterday! Our TEAM became a TEAM. With only one conference match under our belts, we have the whole rest of the season to make things happen. Now that we've figured stuff out and what it takes to be successful, I can't wait to get started! As a setter, I now have the trust of my team and hopefully my coaches to and now we can work some magic!
