CIF VOLLEYBALL PLAYOFFSGladiators Run Out OfSteam In First-Round Loss By Loren Kopff
LANCASTER-As the Gahr girls volleyballteam ventured up Highway 14 tothe high desert for its California InterscholasticFederation-Southern Sectionfirst-round playoff match this past Tuesdaynight, it didn’t know what to expect.Neither did Larry Vocke, the head coach ofQuartz Hill.Since Gahr missed the playoffs lastseason, the first time for head coach SonnyOkamoto who has been around these partsfor 24 seasons, his players were somewhatinexperienced. But such was the case forthe Rebels, although they went to the playoffsin 2008. In any event, Gahr’s seasoncame to an end when Quartz Hill took advantageof a sluggish performance in thefourth set and eliminated the visitors 25-22, 18-25, 25-23, 25-18. The third placerepresentatives from the San Gabriel ValleyLeague, who needed to win one of itsfinal two regular season matches to reachthe playoffs, finish the season at 15-13.“When you’ve been around as long asI have, you’re going to find out there aregoing to be certain things that happen witheach team,” Okamoto said. “Even withinour league with Downey and Warren, wethought Downey was the much better teamand they should have beat Warren [in thesecond round] and win the league outright.[Quartz Hill] defeated Lancaster in thesame manner.”Quartz Hill had entered the match asthe Division III-AA’s 10th ranked team andshared the Golden League championshipwith Lancaster. However, Vocke admittedhe wasn’t sure what to expect since desertteams rarely play teams in the regular seasonfrom southern Los Angeles County orOrange County. “I expected a good gameand we got it,” Vocke said. “I did find outlater today that they were going to be agood defensive team and they’re going tokeep coming at you. That’s exactly whatthey did.“It’s very difficult because no one outhere ever plays them,” Vocke continued. “Iwould like to play in Sonny’s tournamentnext year but it’s far away. Four days for usis a lot of travel.”In the first set, both teams were gettinga feel for each other as they combined forsix ties and four lead changes by the timeit was 8-8. A kill from Jessica Perez gavethe Rebels a 19-12 lead before Gahr madea strong surge to get back into the set. Anace near the back line from junior outsidehitter Annie Reyes made it 19-14 and soonafter, senior outside hitter Tiffany McCrayserved three straight points to bring Gahrto within two points. Her fifth kill of the setlater tied it at 22-22 before a serving errorled to the finish for the Rebels. The second set went back and forth asthe teams traded three to four-point ralliesuntil it was 15-14 in favor of Gahr. That’swhen McCray put down her sixth killwhich was followed by four consecutivepoints served from junior middle blockerJillian Tiedeman. After a kill from EmilyOttinger, senior setter Leeanne Currie hadtwo kills and a block to give Gahr a 24-15advantage. Currie had four kills, two acesand two and a half blocks in the set and juniormiddle hitter Chelsea Heyward addedfour kills and half a block to get Gahr backin the match.“Their setter in game two was doing agood job dumping the ball on us continuously,”Vocke said. “We weren’t reactingto it. We started doing it in game three andin game four. They were doing a good jobkeeping the ball in play.”Quartz Hill led throughout the earlyparts of the third set but with the score12-9, junior middle blocker Erica Willigserved two straight aces before Currie andHeyward combined on another block. Onemore ace from Willig and a kill from Heywardput Gahr up 18-14. Moments later, anace from Tiedeman had the visitors leading23-22 before suffering another collapselike the first set.In the fourth set, Currie’s ninth killmade it a 16-15 lead for the Rebels. ButOttinger slammed her 24th and last kill togive the hosts the serve and Ottinger madesure her team would seal the victory whenshe served five straight points, includingtwo aces.“That’s what they have,” Okamotosaid. “I thought [Perez] should have scoredfor them and she had a hard time scoring. They needed two hitters and those were thetwo they could have gone to.”Jessica Howard pitched in with a dozenkills for the Rebels while Gahr was led byReyes (15 kills, four aces), Currie (10 kills, four aces, four blocks), McCray (10 kills, four aces) and Heyward (eight kills, twoblocks). Currie, McCray and libero ConnieReeves are the only seniors on the team,so experience should help Gahr get back tothe playoffs in 2010. The one big concernwill be at the setter position, which Curriehas held the past three seasons.“The seniorsreached their potential,” Okamoto said. “Itwas their turn; that’s what it came down to.Three years ago, two of them had to learnand then the third senior that came in…thisis the year they had to do it because of mysetter. This was their time.”On a positive note, the 15 victories arethe most since 2002 when the Gladiators,a third place team that season, went to thesemifinals. “As you prepare for championships, nothing should change,” Okamotosaid. “You should do the same things overand over and over. The difficult part was, they already forgot in a year. The rebuildingwas tough for these girls and they didn’tunderstand everything that goes with [goingto the playoffs].” |

By Loren Kopff 10/30/09 Los Angeles Sonny Okamoto, the long time girls volleyball head coach at Gahr, had it all planned out before his team faced Bakersfield Christian to begin pool play action of the Marlborough Tournament last Satuday. In order to have a chance of making the playoffs, the Gladiators needed to go at least 2-1 in pool play, then beat either Warren or Paramount next week. Okamoto got the wins he needed at the tournament as the Gladiators were swept by Bakersfield Christian 25-18, 25-21 but rebounded to sweep Village Christian 25-18, 25-14 and St. Mary’s Academy 25-8, 25-6. Gahr then lost to the host school 25-14 in the first round of the playoffs. Including a sweep of last place Dominguez this past Tuesday, Gahr was sporting an overall record of 12-11 with four more left in the regular season. Gahr was leading most of the way against Bakersfield Christian but surrendered four straight points at the end of both games. Senior middle hitter Chelsea Heyward and senior outside hitter Tiffany McCray combined for nine kills in the match. After beating Village Christian, the last place team from the Olympic League, Gahr has no problems against the Belles. Junior defensive specialist Katie Christiansen led off by serving 10 straight points with five aces and three kills from senior setter Leeanne Currie. In the second game, Christiansen reeled off five straight points with McCray getting four of her 12 kills in that rally. However, in the playoffs, Gahr couldn’t build momentum after leading 7-4 as the Mustangs ran off eight straight points and never looked back. “I’m watching Village Christian play right now and we did a good job serving them” Okamoto said moments after the lost. “We actually hit the spots when we played them. When we played Marlborough we didn’t hit our spots. So there is the difference again in which team showed up.” Gahr will visit Warren on Tuesday, hoping to avenge an earlier loss to the Bears. Should Gahr loose that match, then the biggest match of the season will be Thursday when Gahr hosts Paramount in a battle for third place and a automatic berth to the postseason. “If I beat Warren, I’m in the playoffs,” Okamoto said. “I don’t have to worry about Paramount. My focus for the kids is one play at a time. That’s their job. They don’t go after a ball, then they watch a ball drop. They try to play defense with their eyes. They don’t make moves to the ball like they should. The bottom line is the team that makes the least mistakes is going to win.” |

Gladiators Collapse Late After Taking First Game From Warren
By Loren Kopff
Legendary Gahr girls volleyball head coach Sonny Okamoto knows his team has little to no chance in knocking off Downey anytime soon. So, in order to stay competitive in the San Gabriel Valley League each season, Warren seems to be that one opponent the Gladiators can steal a victory from here and there. Gahr and Warren split their two matches in 2005 and in 2007 and the Gladiators were hoping to secure at least another split in 2009 but the Bears got the upper hand 19-25, 25-14, 25-19, 26-24 last Thursday afternoon at Gahr. Coupled with a victory at Paramount this past Tuesday afternoon, the Gladiators entered its Oct. 22 match at Downey with an overall mark of 9-9 and a league record of 3-2, good enough for third place. The Gladiators led all the way in the first game against the Bears, paced by the hitting of senior outside hitter Tiffany McCray (seven kills) and junior outside hitter Annie Reyes (six kills). Gahr was looking strong in the opening moments of the second game as Reyes added two more kills and junior middle blocker Jillian Tiedeman had a pair of aces. But the Bears and their balanced attack of Heather Adamson, Chelsea Cabrajac, Mallory Hill and Franny Vaaulu rallied back to take an 8-6 lead and when Adamson had four aces plus a kill, Warren was up 15-8. Gahr would post only four kills in the game as it was slightly aided by Warren mistakes. “We haven’t done anything together as a team this year,” Okamoto said. “That’s the difficult part. We’re starting to get healthy but, I’ll make it real simple. Cerritos is good because they play as a team. I think they play better as a team right now than a lot of teams around here. Valley [Christian] might be the other one that plays well as a team.” On the strength of three straight aces from senior setter Leeanne Currie, the Gladiators were sitting with a 9-5 lead in the third game. But Adamson countered with three of her own and eventually the Bears opened up a 16-11 lead. Cabrajac, who has been Warren’s leader the past four seasons despite being injured as a sophomore, had five kills and two aces in the third game. She would lead everyone with 16 kills. “She tried to take over the game and the thing I told my kids was the same thing that happened to them,” Okamoto said. “It takes a team to win the game and when she tried to take it on her own shoulders, it was very difficult for her to do that. It gave us an opportunity. They have weak links just like I have weak links.” Warren made sure the Gladiators wouldn’t jump out to another early lead as Adamson and Sam Madrid each had a kill and a shared block to help Warren lead 10-4 in the fourth game. Gahr did come back and tied the game four times, the last when Warren was called for a lift violation making it a 24-24 contest. But Hill and Lauren McCaughan ended the last ditch attempt with kills. McCray led the Gladiators with 14 kills while Reyes had a dozen kills along with four aces. Junior middle hitter Chelsea Heyward was next in line with six kills as Gahr is still looking to find that consistent offensive attack. “I thought Tiffany has played pretty aggressive since she’s been injured,” Okamoto said. “Hopefully her body will hold up the rest of the year. I need her at least for the Paramount games.” Gahr will participate in the Marlborough Tournament on Saturday, then will host the bottom feeders of the league-Dominguez and Lynwood on Tuesday and Thursday respectively. As for Gahr’s playoff chance this season, it will be determined on the final week of the season when the team goes to Warren, then hosts Paramount. Dating back to 1998, the Gladiators are 20-3 against Paramount but just 7-16 against Warren. “I think we can [beat Warren],” Okamoto said of the next meeting. “The way they played against us, I think we can. But they beat Downey in our tournament [last month]. If we take care of our business against Paramount, we have a chance.” |
