All-State baseball: 3A and 4A

As promised, the 3A and 4A All-State baseball teams were released Tuesday by the Florida Sports Writers Association. And, as expected, American Heritage dominated (nine players total, four on first team). Here are the Miami-Dade and Broward honorees:

3A:

• First Team: JuanCarlos Sulbaran (P, American Heritage); David Villasuso (C, Florida Christian); Eric Hosmer (IF, American Heritage); Daniel Canela (IF, Gulliver Prep); Joey Belviso (OF, American Heritage); Adrian Nieto (DH, American Heritage).
• Second Team: Ryan Kahn (P, American Heritage); Leo Carrillo (OF, Florida Christian).
• Third Team: Ryan Arnold (P, Pompano Beach); Austin Yager (OF, American Heritage); Deven Marrero (IF, American Heritage).
• Honorable Mention: Joe Hone (P, Chaminade-Madonna); Dylan Wolchik (P, Coral Springs Charter); Anthony Tzamtzis (IF, LaSalle); Eric Acevedo (IF, American Heritage); Brandon Sedell (IF, American Heritage).

4A:

• First Team: Mark Alfonso (P, Pace); Luis Lumpuy (IF, Mater Academy).
• Second Team: Lucas Calderon (IF, Belen); Gabby Lima (IF, Cardinal Gibbons); Anthony Bondarenko (OF, Pines Charter).
• Third Team: Carlos Hechevarria (P, Pace); Chad Cabrera (OF, Archbishop McCarthy).
• Honorable Mention: Eric Whaley (P, Cardinal Gibbons); Chris Turino (IF, Archbishop McCarthy).

Pembroke Pines Charter Jaguars baseball athletes Anthony Bondarenko (Pitcher/Outfielder) and Robert Mesa (Catcher/First Baseman) will be signing a National Letter of Intent to be members of the 2009 Nova Southeastern University Sharks baseball team. The ceremony will be held on Monday, April 14, 2008, at the Pembroke Pines Charter High School.

5 for 10 with a HR and two RBI’s and pitched five innings allowing only one run.

Top Performers - Baseball - Anthony Bondarenko, Pembroke Pines Charter: Senior batted .500 with two doubles, a home run, two stolen bases and two RBI's in two games last week. 

Anthony Bondarenko was also listed in the weekly Sun-Sentinel Baseball Statistics Report for top performers in Broward County:

Monday, February 4th, 2008 - Welcome to Jaguar Baseball. The 2007 Jaguars finished second in the District 15 (4A) and made it to the Regional Quarter finals. The Jaguars have set two goals for the upcoming season. First to win Districts and secondly to become State Champions. This team understands and has accepted the hard work and sacrifice that goes along with these aspirations.

The Jaguars expect to compete with intensity and sportsmanship while they win games. Our program has seen vast improvement and will continue to do so under the helpful hands of the Jaguar Baseball Booster Club parents, coaches and players, who all share the vision of having the best program in the state.

We have several returning starters that we know will have a strong impact on our team this year.

Robert Mesa, SR, Catcher, All Broward Second Team, outstanding defensive catcher and hitter, BA .347, 18 RBI and 6 HR.

Shawn Negron, SR, LHP/1B, Broward Honorable Mention, excellent pitcher and hitter. He was 3-1 with 36 K's in 29 innings and BA .353, 15 RBI, 2 HR and 6 stolen bases.

Anthony Bondarenko, SR, RHP/RF, strong defense in RF and a clutch hitter. He was 2-2 with an ERA of 2.63, BA .296 with 9 stolen bases.

John Hollnagel, JR, RHP/1B. He was our closer with four saves with an ERA of 3.61 and displayed outstanding defense at 1B.

Tyler Jacobs, JR, 2B/SS, BA . 297, 3 HR. He started the year as our ninth hitter and became our lead off hitter by the end of the season.

Joshua Barrocas, JR, LF. He has one of the strongest work ethics on the team, BA .286, 16 RBI and 6 stolen bases.

We have a strong coaching staff, striving to teach, mentor, and assist each player in reaching the next level in their playing career.

The Jaguars are strongly supported by the City of Pembroke Pines Parks and Recreation Director, Dean Combs, School Principal, Peter Bayer, and Athletic Director, Graig Good. Their support is evident as exhibited through the overall aggressive progress of the school's athletic program. I am extremely excited about the present and future of the Jaguars Baseball program at Pembroke Pines Charter High School. We are looking forward to a challenging season, filled with victories and meaningful experiences for the athletes and all of the Jaguars supporters.
