PANTHERS DRAW AGAINST AMHERST

The boys’ varsity soccer team battled for eighty minutes against the Division I Comets (7-1-1), with the game ending in a 1-1 draw. Despite several good opportunities for the Panthers in the first half, the game was tied 0-0 at halftime. In the second half, sophomore Ryan Lutke sent senior Jimmy Zambo a great through ball, resulting in a one-on-one with the keeper that Zambo was able to finish. Unfortunately, the Comets would tie the game about ten minutes later. Junior goalkeeper Frank Sanabria made a great save on the initial shot by the Comets, but the rebound bounced right to an unmarked player who was able to find the back of the net. Each team had its chances to break the tie, but both defenses were up the task of keeping it tied 1-1.

PANTHERS WRANGLE THE LONGHORNS

The boys’ varsity soccer team dominated Lutheran West, scoring five goals in the first half of play. Senior Matt Bir scored two goals, both assisted by fellow senior Jimmy Zambo. In addition to his two assists, Zambo also scored on a beautiful header off of a corner kick taken by sophomore Vincent Faraji. Sophomore Taylor Millar also scored on a header, flicked on off of a pass from Miles Foisy. Sophomore David Elwer scored his team leading sixth goal on an absolute rocket shot off of a headed cross from senior Mike Haupt. Junior goalkeeper Frank Sanabria played the first half and was called on to make just two saves. Sophomore Taylor Robinson played the second half in goal for the Panthers, making two saves and surrendering the lone goal for the Longhorns. Seniors Patrick Avery, Luke Fenik, and Nick Smeraldi led the team in the second half and created some great opportunities for the Panthers. Unfortunately, despite several chances, the Panthers were unable to find the back of the net in the second half. The Panthers improved to 5-4-2 with the victory.

PANTHERS WIN MUDBOWL VS. GREEN WAVE

The boys’ varsity soccer team defeated Holy Name 1-0 in a game played on a field in horrendous shape. Senior Angelo Cataldo scored the lone goal for the Panthers, volleying the ball into the back of the net off of a free kick taken by Jimmy Zambo. Both teams struggled to put together an attack due to the condition of the field. The Panther defense, led by seniors Matt Bir, Mike Haupt, and Angelo Cataldo, and anchored by junior goalkeeper Frank Sanabria, earned its third shutout of the year.

PANTHERS DEFEAT COLUMBIA 2-1

The boys’ varsity soccer team improved to 7-4-2 with a 2-1 victory over Columbia High School. The Panthers found themselves trailing 1-0 at halftime after a Columbia shot hit the crossbar and was then put in on a header. Although EC outshot Columbia 10-2 in the first half, the Panthers had nothing to show for their effort. Midway through the second half, senior Angelo Cataldo tied things up when he converted on a header off of a Ryan Lutke free kick. Senior Jimmy Zambo was able to break the tie with just over seven minutes remaining when he also scored on a header off of a Ryan Lutke corner kick. The Panthers played most of the game in the Raiders half of the field, but struggled to find the back of the net. Junior goalkeeper Frank Sanabria had the play of the game when he saved a penalty kick with the Panthers trailing 1-0. The momentum quickly shifted after the save, and the Panthers dominated the rest of the way.

Boys soccer: Zambo scores three goals to lead Elyria Catholic past Elyria

Bob Daniels | The Chronicle-Telegram

ELYRIA — No need to stop the presses or interrupt the program. Pointless to start texting people around the country. It’s not exactly news when Elyria Catholic’s boys put a whippin’ on the Elyria High soccer team.
It happened again Saturday at Knights of Columbus Field. In their annual battle for the Elyria Cup, the Panthers drilled the Pioneers 5-0 as junior forward Jimmy Zambo scored a hat trick. EC also got goals from Brian Wood and Evan Cecil, and assists by Ryan Lutke and Matt Bir.
"This is a big game, something we train for the whole season," Zambo said of the crosstown rivalry. "We look at is as, if they win this, it will make their season. They would be the first Elyria team in nine years to beat Elyria Catholic so, yeah, this was a big game for us."
The goals were Zambo’s 17th, 18th and 19th of the season. And the victory was EC’s sixth straight over the Pioneers since the teams tied in 2002.
The Pioneers got off to a strong start. Christopher Westgate fired a rocket over the crossbar in the fifth minute on the restart after an EC foul, and Bryce Ziegman worked his way into the Panthers box, where he put a hard shot right at goalkeeper Frank Sanabria.
But Zambo changed the complexion of the match in the 12th minute when he made a long run down the left side, worked his way past the Pioneers defense and scored as he got tangled with goalkeeper Adam Turnick coming off his line.
In the 21st minute, Wood got control in the Elyria box and scored after Michael Haupt dribbled in and was knocked to the ground. Some thought the play should have resulted in a penalty kick.
Zambo completed his hat trick with two goals a minute apart in the first eight minutes after the break. In the 47th minute, he collared a rebound and kicked it in with Turnick off his line and out of the action. And in the 48th minute, he again made a long run down the right side, fought his way free of the Elyria defense with a 360-degree move in the box and scored.
Cecil nailed the crusher in the 54th minute when he kicked in the rebound after a throw-in deep in the Elyria end. The Pioneers made their final legitimate threat three minutes later when Tim Jones, working down the left side, finally took the ball away from the EC defense. But he launched a left-footer over the Panthers crossbar.
"We knew if we came out early and put some pressure on them we’d be OK," said EC coach Mike Wisnor, whose team improved to 9-5-2. "They’re a young team, as we are, and that’s the thing about young teams — sometimes if you can put them on their heels, it become a little bit easier."
It was the seventh shutout of the season for Sanabria.
"In the beginning they were strong," Sanabria said of the Pioneers’ energetic start. "But once we started scoring, they started to fade. My defense made my job easy today. Our defense is very strong."
Elyria’s Jones earned two yellow cards for rough play in the 62nd and 74th minutes. He was ejected, but under OHSAA rules will be eligible for the Pioneers’ sectional tournament game Wednesday because he did not receive a red card.
"They got a couple goals that we just lost focus on," said Elyria coach Greg Leininger, whose team fell to 2-10-2. "We weren’t marking up and we weren’t playing tight. We gave them space that they shouldn’t have been allowed."
