Madera 13s take long road

to state semifinal game

By Paul Stanford

THE MADERA TRIBUNE

FOWLER - Thirteen has

proven to be anything but an

unlucky number for Madera

in the 13-year-old state Babe

Ruth Tournament in Fowler.

Manager Andy Gutierrez

threw his ace Scott Roberts in

the opening-game win Friday,

but surviving against the eight

best teams the state has to offer

more often than not comes

down to who has the greatest

depth.

“I have said it all along,”

Gutierrez said. “If it comes

down to pitching depth, I will

take our chances against just

about any team. And now it

really becomes critical the

next two games because

teams are scrambling for

pitching to carry them.”

In the double-elimination

format, a team may get to

have one off game, but never

two. So when Madera

dropped a 7-3 decision Saturday,

it was time for Gutierrez

to see how deep his pitching

staff and bench were after

never being remotely challenged

in capturing the Dis-

trict 2 championship and having

to work their way through

the consolation bracket to

reach a potential bid in the title

game.

But after a 6-2 victory Sunday

afternoon,Madera had little

time to rest as a 5 p.m.

matchup against host Dinuba

to stay alive in the tournament

loomed just minutes ahead.

And Madera crashed the

home team’s party by dispatching

Dinuba 12-2 to advance

to the state championship

semifinal game today

against either Tulare or Santa

Maria at 6 p.m.

“We will go with Sal (Martinez)

and if we make it to the

championship game, Scott

will get the ball,” Gutierrez

said. “There’s no tomorrow

for any team at this point. You

just go with what you have.

And I like what we have.”

Madera 12, Dinuba 2

Gutierrez again put the ball

in the sure hands of Roberts

and the hard-slinging southpaw

didn’t disappoint by

throwing four innings, allowing

three hits with 3 strikeouts

to run his season record to an

unblemished 15-0. Joseph

Mendrin came in pitching the

final inning and picked up the

save and Madera finished off

Dinuba in five innings via the

mercy rule. Madera had eight

hits led by Mendrin and

Donovan Bertoncini, who

each were 2-for-4 with runs

batted in.

“Dinuba had just come back

to beat Fowler 16-15 the game

before after trailing 15-7, so

we knew they were a team not

to be taken lightly,” Gutierrez

said. “But we got our bats going

and put them away fairly

easy.”

Sal Martinez took the hill

for Madera and tossed a complete-

game 2-hitter while

recording 7 strikeouts with only

three walks. Selma took an

early 2-0 lead, but it was all

Madera the rest of the way

with the help of 5 Selma errors.

Bertoncini and Roberts

paved the way for Madera as

each went 2-for-4 with RBIs.

“Again, we are not a onetrick

pony when it comes to

pitching,” Gutierrez said. “Sal

was dominating on the mound

and was clearly in control getting

ahead of just about every

batter.”

Isaac Granado took a no-hitter

through 3 1/3 innings but

the normally high-octane

Madera offense could only

muster three hits on single by

JosephMendrin,AntonyMartinez

and Ezekiel Gallardo.

Isaac Garcia had a pair of

walks and scored two runs for

Madera. The score was knotted

3-3 in the top of the fifth

but Tulare cashed in with two

runs in the bottom of the fifth

and took advantage of three

walks and a single in the bottom

of the sixth handing

Madera the 7-3 loss.

“This was just an off game

for us,” Gutierrez said. “I told

the team afterwards that it’s

time to battle back and show

just how good a team we are.”
