EAST ASCENSION 14, LIVE OAK 8: All the off-season work at EA included a transition from the spread offense Lambert ran in his first two seasons to the veer he installed before the third.Avery Williams must be sold.The powerful senior running back twice exploded out of his three-point stance for long scores, breaking several tackles each time.His first TD came on EA’s first possession and covered 57 yards. His second capped a go-ahead drive in which Lambert called seven straight running plays.In bursting 26 yards on his final carry of the night, Williams, who finished with 94 yards, helped EA answer Live Oak’s late awakening.Still, the Eagles who started at their own 37 with 1:40 left, moved all the way to the EA 18 on their final possession before time ran out.“In a game where the outcome doesn’t count, you want to have your team in a position where they must adjust to as many situations that can come along,” Lambert said. “That’s hard sometimes when you’re talking about two 12-minute halves.”Live Oak quarterback David Bell provided Lambert what he sought — some adversity — as the senior, a victim of several dropped balls in the first half, completed six straight passes at one point late and twice connected on fourth down.With about five minutes left, Bell found Alex Switzer for an over-the-top, 24-yard score. Another Bell-to-Switzer hookup followed on the 2-point try. EA answered. |
