We start our season practice on October 22. I can't believe I'm a senior and this will be my last year to play in high school. We will have 12 seniors and 1 sophomore on the varsity this year. Of the 12 seniors, 7 of us have played select ball together since we were in 4th grade. We each could have played on other select teams in the area, but chose to stay together in order to have a chance to advance to the regional and possibly the state tournament when we were in high school. Believe me, there were some rough times, too! Girls will be girls, and the competition between us was fierce, to say the least. But as we have grown, so have our relationships. We made it through and now we are all together as seniors, and I could not imagine sharing the court with anybody else. We have a common goal...last year we made it to the regional semi finals tournament at St. Mary's in San Antonio, and we would like to have a repeat season. Our record last year was 29-10--and 2 or 3 games in there we shot ourselves in our own foot, so to speak. No matter, I'm still proud of the season I had. I was forced to step up my ball handling during district when our starting point guard tore her ACL--our team's 3 victim in as many years. Kensi, Chelsea, and Kristin have all suffered the pain of surgery and recovery for the team. All are back this year and healthy, thank God! I pray there are no more injuries to set us back for our senior year.
We are also under the direction of a new head coach this year--Hector Serna. For as long as I have played basketball for TM, Coach Oden was always the head coach. We organized our "select TM" team called the Hot Shots when we are all in 4th grade. There were originally 10 members on the team. 7 of us remain with 1 other of the members playing with us on occassion (more now since she will be on the varsity with us this year). We have played in more tournaments than I could ever count, and I have all the medals in my closet to prove it. When we first started, my mom coached us. She was also coaching at the Middle School at that time. Looking back at that first group picture we took is hilarious! When we started 5th grade, my mom asked Jenna's (another player on the Hot Shots) dad, who coached the boys Middle School team, if he would take us on. Fortunately, he said yes, and we had two excellent coaches that wanted us to be the best we could be. They were only able to coach us until we were in seventh grade because of UIL rules. At that point, Kensi's dad took over. We played here in Corpus Christi a lot, and traveled out of town occassionally. We attend a year-round school and only have a 6 week summer, making it difficult to fit in family time and camps and basketball. But we played a bunch, I know that! Now, my mom is the JV coach at the High School, and Coach Serna is our head Varsity coach. I am soooo excited for the season to get underway!
We play 3 games tomorrow in a one day tournament and I am looking forward to getting back on the court. It' been about 3 weeks since we played, other than in athletics, and I CAN'T WAIT!!! |
