Tuesday, August 19 Bishop McGuiness
Varsity Recap What a night! Bishop McGuinness was celebrating the reopening of its refurbished new gym and as the #2 team in 5A, wanted nothing more than to knock off Class 6A's 4th ranked Stillwater in front of a very loud, rowdy crowd. It was not to be however as the Lady Pioneers played outstanding team volleyball and took the match 3-1 (25-20, 21-25, 25-17, 25-21). SHS was led offensively by junior OH Sarah Groesbecks 16 kills, but it was a true team effort as senior RS Regan Sirbaugh continued to amaze with 9 kills on 13 swings and only one error, while junior OH Anna Gentry played a solid all around game and ended with 8 kills and sophomore MB Devin Kerns shown brightly late with 6 kills on 12 attempts and no errors. All of the offense came against a very solid and scrappy McGuinness defense. Defensively Groesbeck also led the Pioneers with 14 digs, closely followed by junior Libero Mary O'Neill's 12 digs. O'Neill got the start at Libero for the first time and played very well in both serve receive (2.25) and on defense. Midway through the match SHS switched from a 6-2 to a 5-1 offense and the change allowed Maddie Field to come in as a DS and show her stuff. She finished with 5 aces on 15 attempts and 7 digs vs 0 errors. Gentry and senior MB Chelsey Huddleston each had 3 aces as well in the contest. The team was consistently led by senior setter Amy Kangas who excelled with 32 assists, 2 kills and a dig. Wieligman finished with 5 assists and 3 digs as well. Stillwater (2-1) returns to action this Friday and Saturday at the difficult Tulsa Union Tournament. |
