I didn't think the summer could get any better and then my beach partner and I flew out to California for the 2008 USAV Youth National Beach Tour Championships.
WE WON THE GOLD MEDAL!!!!
We are currently the 2008 USAV Florida Region Junior State Champions and the 2008 Series Champions. We were looking to win one more title before heading indoors to play for varsity at South Lake High School in Groveland, FL, which is located west of Orlando.
Huntington Beach was beautiful and the weather was fantastic. We played at the Pier and the breeze coming off the ocean was keeping it cool on the sand but the competition was red hot. We are use to playing on the best beaches in Florida, dealing with the scorching sands at times and high humidity, but with that not an issue, we kicked our game into a higher gear.
We competed against a team from Denver, but most of the teams were from California. We were the only team from Florida playing in the girls 18u division and we were determined to represent our State well. AND WE DID! WE WON THE GOLD MEDAL!!!!!
We went undefeated all day, advancing out of pool play in 1st place and getting a bye into the semi-finals. Our first game went smoothing, easily defeating our competition and advancing into the championship game. Knowing we would at least get the silver medal took a lot of pressure off, but we had flown out to Cali to bring the gold medal home. Our championship started slow, 1-7, but we took a timeout, regrouped and started playing our game. Short shots, angle, line, we tried to keep them guessing as to what we were going to do next. Final score was 28-22 and WE HAD WON THE GOLD MEDAL AT NATIONALS. We had been training for this moment for 2 years. We had competed the last 2 years in the Junior Olympics: 2006 in Virginia Beach placing 5th in the nation and in 2007 in Knoxville, TN, where we finished 7th in the nation. We knew we could do better, so we made some adjusts to our game, added some new shots, and practiced almost every day.
It paid off in gold, A GOLD MEDAL THAT IS!!!!!!!!! |
