What Can A Tall Setter Do For Your Team In 2009?

The style of setting has changed A LOT since I started setting. It used to be the fast, smaller player who was great at getting to the ball and loved the sport but often times was too short to play the next or hit. Don't get me wrong, these are awesome players....there's still a lot of coaches out there that love this style of play.

In the last two club seasons, I have spent lots of time learning the benefits of being a tall setter! It is the most awesome thing ever to get to where I am now with my skills! It makes playing so much more fun and sure helps us to win a lot too!!!!

The first key to success is having great defensive players that can run just like that classic speedy setter and get the great pass on that first hit. I count on my team mates to do their part so that I can do mine. Passing accuracy is something that we've worked on lots over the last two season.....including me! Sometimes I get that first hit and I know that it's got to be right there so that my Right Side can make that awesome set for me. The second key to success is to be right there at the net and to be able to read the other team so that I can get the perfect set to the player who can make the best attack! If I'm right up at the net, I can use any style of set. I can do quick sets to the middle, swing it outside for a great kill or even trick the other side with a quick to the back.  I love to mix it up so that the defense on the other team is always left wondering what I'll do next! The third key to success is blocking! As I've gotten taller, I can totally see the benefits of being able to block as a setter. If I can improve my jump by about 2 more inches I think I'll be able to get these ever time! It helps me too to work well with my middle and right side so that together, we can play aggressive defense! The fourth and last key to success as a tall setter is that ever present ability to kill the ball myself. I haven't yet worked with a right side that has been quite strong enough to give me some consistent great sets but, when I do, I have some pretty great power that I'm just waiting to unleash!!! My serves are always killer and I know I can put that power into hitting as well. What fun it can be to be a setter that can get kills as well!

So being a tall setter is a great thing! If after reading this, you are interested in hearing more about my skills, please email me via my profile!
