With another season in the books, Section 4 proved again that it's one of the elite areas for high school softball in New York. Section 4 led all other sections with three teams advancing to a New York State Public High School Athletic Association championship games Saturday at the BAGSAI Complex in Nimmonsburg. Windsor won its Class B title game, 2-0, over Section 6's Fredonia. Horseheads lost in the Class AA title game, 6-1, to Section 11's West Babylon and Afton lost in the Class D championship game to Section 9's Chapel Field, 4-2 in 8 innings. Section 5 (Genesee Valley, Rochester area) and Section 2 (Capital District, Albany area) were next-best by placing two teams in the championship games. "I said all along that our (Southern Tier Athletic) Conference is one of the best leagues in the state," Windsor coach Bill Waldron said. "Playing in the STAC playoff games and sectionals prepared us for what we faced in states." The league and section games could've provided the toughest competition Windsor faced. In the Section 4 Class B semifinals and championship games, the Black Knights outscored their opponents, 7-3 including a 2-1 nine-inning victory over Chenango Valley in the sectional title game. Windsor, whose only two losses this season came to CV, outscored its three state playoff opponents, 14-1. The Black Knights continued Section 4's run in the Class B title game, as the section has won it four of the last five years. Repeating the success in Class B next season might be tough for Windsor, whose one of many teams that graduated Division I talent. Meghan Tucker (Binghamton University) was the winning pitcher in all three state playoff games, catcher Kristin Waldron (University at Buffalo) had a three-run homer in the state title game and shortstop Tenley Halaquist (Lehigh University) had the go-ahead RBI single in Windsor's sectional championship. Despite the key losses, Bill Waldron says his team still will compete next season with sophomore third baseman Becca Griswold and freshman pitcher Cara Martin leading the way. "We got pitching and we got defense," Bill Waldron said. "We also have a JV squad that went undefeated before losing in the STAC title game. They're some real nice players on that team." Among the JV call-ups that experienced the state championship were Whitney Blair, Amy Carson, MacKenzie Mullins, Katie Sisson and Leslie Dempsey. Windsor will also return sophomore second baseman Jessica Bump, eighth-grade outfielder Kelly Costello and sophomore first baseman Beth Bankhead. Windsor isn't the only squad that will have key players to replace. Chenango Valley pitcher Siera Sheehan (University of Hartford), Seton Catholic Central pitcher Anderson Conte (St. Bonaventure University) and Union-Endicott centerfielder/first baseman Rachel Jones (University of Delaware) are all headed for Division I schools. |
