I wonder what Piniella would say if his team had to play twice
in a day during the playoffs as the softball teams from Afton and
Chapel Field did Saturday?
The teams arrived at 8 a.m. Saturday at the BAGSAI Complex near
Binghamton. The Crimson Knights won their Class D semifinal, 6-0, over
Argyle, while the Lions downed Elba, 1-0, in nine innings.
Then, after sitting through a two-hour weather delay, Chapel Field
defeated Afton, 4-2, in eight innings in a dramatic championship, the
game ending around 6 p.m. _ 10 hours after the teams' arrival.
Afton pitcher Morgan Muller and batterymate Amber Lynn were caked in
dirt from head-to-toe at the conclusion of the tournament, a sure sign
they'd put forth maximum effort in their final high school games.
"We went out there hard, both teams," Afton standout shortstop
Jessie Winans said after the championship. "We like this kind of game _
close, exciting games like this."
