CT Post Servilla sparks Fairfield Ludlowe past Staples MICHAEL FORNABAIO Article Last Updated: 04/25/2008 09:53:17 PM EDT WESTPORT —
Staples never capitalized on its big chances. It kept putting Fairfield Ludlowe right fielder Jonathan Servilla in the spotlight, and he kept coming through in Ludlowe's 14-6, eight-inning win Friday. Servilla beat out an infield single to spark the eight-run eighth, and he had four RBIs. Three of those RBIs came in three at-bats after Staples intentionally walked leadoff hitter Mike Paloian. That kept the visiting Falcons (10-1, 9-0) perfect in FCIAC play. "(Paloian) always steps forward," Servilla said. "It was my chance to do it for him." The Wreckers (6-5, 6-4 FCIAC) walked Paloian to put runners on the corners with two out in the top of the eighth. "I'm not going to let their best hitter beat us. That's the philosophy here," Staples coach Jack McFarland said. "The last time I did, (former New Canaan standout) Curt Casali hit one off the soccer sign (far away). He's (Paloian) their best hitter. We've got to make some plays." Staples pitcher James Lothrop got ahead 1-2 on Servilla, but Servilla fouled off three pitches to stay alive. His shot back to the box caromed off Lothrop and trickled to shortstop Jack Hennessy. Servilla was called safe on a close play, driving home Tom Nagy, over the Wreckers' protests. "His wheels beat that out," Ludlowe coach Keith O'Rourke said. "There's a reason he's hitting (second). We've got a lot of confidence in him." Lothrop hit a batter, walked another, then was relieved, but Conor Roach and Nagy each had two-run singles later. The Wreckers could have won in regulation. They left two men on in the fourth, then left the bases loaded in each of the last four innings. "Blown opportunities," McFarland said. "We had so many chances to win the game, it was ridiculous. I don't think we played good enough defense to win a game like this." When Staples loaded the bases in the seventh, O'Rourke went to closer Logan Hartman to face Mike Samela. Hartman got Samela to strike out. "It wasn't the ideal situation," O'Rourke said, "but it was the game-saver." Staples had already climbed out of a 5-2 hole. Ryan Crofts, Dexter Garcia and Vin Lametta drove in runs in the fourth; Crofts' single to left gave Staples a lead in the bottom of the fifth. Servilla tied the game with a bases-loaded ground ball in the top of the sixth, then robbed Hennessy of at least a leadoff single with a diving catch in the bottom of the inning. "As a program, we've been around four years," O'Rourke said. "Besides Warde, across town, I can't think of a team in the conference that we've developed such an intense rivalry with. It's tooth-and-nail." Ludlowe scored three in the first, capped by Kevin Keys' solo home run to right. The Wreckers came back with two in the bottom of the inning, with doubles by Hennessy and Samela and an error that brought Samela home.
