| SLATE HILL — The toughest competition Chapel Field has faced in the past decade is against itself. And they have yet to succumb to the pressure. Chapel
Field defeated Livingston Manor, 4-0, and captured its 10th consecutive
Section 9 Class D championship Saturday at Minisink Valley High School. The Lions have won five state titles. "I
think there is pressure, but it's not overwhelming," Chapel Field coach
Bill Spanjer Jr. said. "It's always there in the background, but we've
won in several pressure situations." Chapel
Field (22-0) went undefeated during the regular season and junior
hurler Alyssa Brognano struck out 12 and gave up three hits for the
shutout."It shows that we don't give up," Brognano said. "We do whatever is necessary to win." Chapel
Field put the pressure on early when Michelle Larson scored the first
run on a passed ball in the bottom of the first. Kiersten Kuperus had
an RBI double in the bottom of the second to put the Lions up 2-0. Then,
Livingston Manor freshman pitcher Marissa Diescher gave up an RBI
single to Brognano (1-for-3, RBI) to make it 3-0 in the fifth. Senior
catcher Jackie Roebuck had a hit and scored two runs."I'm just really proud we were able to keep the tradition going," Roebuck said. Livingston
Manor (15-4) had an opportunity to crawl back in the top of the sixth
when Emily Casey and Christine Babich had back-to-back singles to start
the inning. But Brognano struck out Diescher swinging and Valentina
Babich went down looking to end the threat. "I was nervous when Diescher came up," Brognano said. "But I got her with my screwball."Diescher,
who is 0-3 versus Chapel Field this season, had seven strikeouts and
gave up four hits, but struggled with her command all game. Times Herald Record Middletown, NY
