My son Joshua is almost 11 years old, and started playing ice hockey in Dec 2006 at the age of 9. He started playing in the house league at the end of the season, because I didn't know when try outs were. We got Joshua a skating coach, and in Feb 2007 he tried out for the travel team. Joshua received a phone call from the Prince William squirt “AA” travel coach, stating that he would like Joshua to play for the team. We were so excited to have received the phone call. I was so surprised to see that my son had made it from house, straight to the top “AA” travel team. The 2007-2008 travel season was awesome. We won the division title, but lost in the finals of the championship. Joshua ended up with 47 points in 56 games played. I think for being our first ever travel season, these are some pretty good numbers. Joshua also played for a second team, the Virginia Express “AA” team. We had played the VA Express in a non league game during our season. One of my good friends on our PW team knows the coach of the VA Express. Joshua was asked to join there team for an “AAA” tournament in PA. It turned out to be a great move on our part. Joshua ended up being the “AAA” tournament MVP, with 8 points in 4 games played. I employed the services of a great hockey player/instructor, Mr. Matt Guffey. He has been working on conditioning, skating, stick handling, shooting … all around hockey sense. With the 2007-2008 winter hockey seasons over, we were looking to continue working on my son’s skills. We wanted to go straight into spring hockey. Joshua tried out for the “AAA” Washington All-Stars elite travel hockey team. With great surprise again, Joshua has made the team. I cannot believe that a kid can go from house league to AAA, all within 2 years. We are going to try out for the Washington Little Caps, for the winter hockey season. Tryouts start April 8th, 2008….. I will keep you posted…. |
