Slate Hill-When Alyssa Brognano took to the mound for yesterday's
Section 9 Class D final against S.S. Seward, the sophomore wasn't just
trying to pitch Chapel Field to another Section 9 title. She was trying
to keep a legacy alive. The legacy of the pitcher who preceded her, Ashlee Renwick - in
the stands yesterday. Of Julie Schaper, who preceded Renwick on the
mound. And Liz Beirne, who came before Schaper.
Pitching. It's why the Lions have won every Section 9 Class D Title since 1999 and four state titles in that span.
And Brognano, in her first year on the mound, kept alive the
dynasty, throwing a three-hitter and fanning 12 as Chapel Field blanked
Seward 8-0. So what does Chapel Field coach Bill Spanjer Jr. look for in a pitcher?
"We look for leadership," he said. "And Alyssa didn't have it
easy; there's no one on this team who's won a state title." "(She has)
consistency. She throws well and she doesn't walk any hitters"
With two outs in the bottom of the first inning and a runner on
second base, Chapel Field's Lyndi Fielitz hit a grounder to Seward
shortstop Malloury Matuseski. But Matuseski's throw sailed over the
head of first baseman. Kiersten Kuperus then blooped a double into
short right, bringing home Fielitz.
And that was more than enough for Brognano, who had an 0.75 ERA entering the game.
"It makes me nervous sometimes," she said of living up to the
Chapel Field pitching standard. "Like today, I was nervous at the start
of the game, then once we scored a couple of runs I calmed down, then I
was nervous again in the last inning."
Now Brognano has her Section 9 title. But the three pitchers that came before her still have something she doesn't have.
A state title.
Two more wins, and Brognano can join that club. Chapel Field (16-4) plays next Saturday a 11AM
"It would be pretty awesome" she said.
